Hi I'm a newbie so be patient with me. I'm Cyril (Cy) I am 83 I've been a diabetic for about 14 years, ( T2 and then T1) I am now on Humulin M3. 90 units in the morning and 22 u before tea. I've just read that a reading of 4.6 is alright? if I get below 5.0 I'm having a Hypo. I've been having a few Hypos at night, can any one help.

I am a newbie myself but I try to keep my levels between the high 4s and low 5s at resting. Below 4 is technically classed as a hypo. When do you get hypos? Not long after going to bed or closer to when you wake up?

Hi @cyril.rayner and welcome.
Have you had tests to prove that you are a Type1 or are you still a Type2 and using insulin?
I will bump your post up for replies from insulin users and hope that they can help you.

Hi. A few things. How is your weight and diet? Those insulin shots seem quite high which implies your BMI may also be a bit high. Anything that reduces your amount of insulin e.g. weight loss and/or lower-carb diet will help reduce blood sugar swings. Note that if you reduce your food intake then you would need to reduce the insulin. If your weight is around normal and you still have large blood sugar swings then you may be a Late onset T1 rather than T2 and you might want to discuss going onto the insulin Basal/Bolus regime. It involves more shots daily but gives better control. A change may not be needed but be aware there is a possible next step.

Hi @cyril.rayner ,

I am using humalog mix25 and I've had to modify my diet to acheive a reasonable level of success. I agree with others that you seem to be taking a lot of insulin - of course, you may need it but the numbers seem high and the fact that you're having hypos means that maybe you have a bit too much insulin flowing around inside you.

Sorry if you already know this but your insulin is a mixture of 30% rapid acting insulin and 70% long acting insulin. The rapid acting part reaches its peak at around 2 hours but can last upto 5hrs in the body. The long acting part is designed to last upto 12hrs. So I would be interested in the exact timings of your injections, you may be ramping up before the previous injection has worn off.

Your post also reads as though you're on a fixed dose whereas I vary my dosage according to my food intake - is that a reasonable assumption on my part?

With regard to your hypo's, I would definitely advise you to seek medical assistance from your endocrinologist (if you're lucky enough to have one) or your diabetes nurse / GP.
