Needle Tip Sizes

I mostly use 4mm needles, but if I want a fast correction, I'll use a 6mm into muscle. Wouldn't do that for a food injection though, purely corrections.

Into muscle?

Only did that once...........never again :nurse:

Out of interest does the insulin get absorbed fast when you go into muscle?

Yes, about 20% faster for me. I only use it for small doses (up to a unit) when I want to correct quickly.

Which muscle do you use ? Arms or leg for a quick correction. I've only done it once when I was on the pump and it failed and injected into the arm muscle -- it did the trick ;)

Deltoid or calf usually. It’s too fast to use for food, but ideal for a quick correction.

Your a brave girl @Mel dCP only hit a muscle once, accidently and vowed never to do it again.
It’s a Dr Bernstein technique, I was bricking it first time I tried it. I’m quite well padded, no chance of hitting muscle on my torso or thigh, so deltoid is a very deliberate change to make. My corrections are never more than a unit at a time, I sort of dribble it in pump stylee over the course of a few hours. Because I’m so low carb, my doses are really small - only 8.5u Tresiba twice a day and a unit or two with food. My biggest doses tend to be to fix DP, tbh. I think four units has been my biggest dose since I made that switch.

Ouch!!!!! I, the same as @Knikki , only once have I accidentally gone into a muscle, a LONG time ago with the extra long needles and wouldnt do that again. I have virtually no fat on me at all, so have to pinch to inject and avoid a muscle at all cost. @Mel dCP you are indeed VERY brave lol

Happy to donate fat to anyone ;)

Like I say, it’s only tiny doses. I’ve never hypo’d from it, because I don’t inject enough to put me under my target. My tedious strategy of taking loads of tiny doses over a period of time rather than one big one (while tracking it carefully so I know exactly how much I have on board) keeps me safe.

i use 4mm for both bolus and basal and you are right about different brands i iuse owen and mumford unifine pentip plus but a couple of months ago dr decided to change to neon veryfine omg it was like stabbing yourself with a blunt knife horrendous .quick visit bk to gp and was changed back .apparently rep had been in to save practise some money ....well no love not on my body ye not ;)

Only just switched to 6 mm after using 8mm and larger for over 30 years A lot less bruising

I use 4mm on both legs and stomach. I probably don't rotate quite enough, but I called the manufacturer of the needles and they are sending me a sample injection 'stencil' thingy to help me use different injection sites better. Hoping it will get me into better rotation habits!

Oh I like that idea. I need one of those as I think I rotate ok but in reality probably don't as I get a lot of lumps from injecting into recent site areas again ;)

I 1st started 46 years ago. Needles then were BIG.....the size of darning needles. BUT darning needles were sharper. We had 6 - 8 needles in a plastic box which were to last a month, so they got pretty blunt VERY quick. Oh the joys. So glad things have moved on :)

Remember them well! Enormous and thick! Big glass syringe kept in Methylated spirit!!
I use 6mm needles now and have no problem. Basal in thighs and bum, bolus in stomach and arms. Tried 4mm but every jab left a small lump wherever I put it so DSN put me back on 6mm.
