How difficult does it get to manage your condition if you have problems with nerve damage and eyesight?

is there any products that help people manage diabetes who have nerve damage or problems with eyesight?

Having been diagnosed as legally blind, altho i can see somethings, my nurse specialist was going to order me a talking blood sugar monitor, I was not thrilled. In her bag of tricks she had one with a large backlit display, it is working out fine. It is a Freestyle Neo, well called that in Australia, different countries have diff names just to confuse us more:p
That made it sound as if it is huge , it is not, jus the number on display is bigger than usual

I am a male,68 & with diabetes 2. It's never been a problem in the 10 years I've had it. BUT 4 weeks ago my eyes started seeing everything in double, near or far. So frustrating! I cannot legally drive anymore is one of the negative effects. Two eye doctors say it's a paralysed eye nerve that will from 6 weeks to 6 months heal itself naturally. So they gave me no treatment. Are they right in their opinion?
It was all supposed to have started because my blood pressure was too high, as was my blood sugar levels plus a bit of stress.I never felt any pain & the eyes gradually got worse & worse. I pray they will start to improve soon.
Anyone have any advice or opinions for me? Funnily enough sitting on my computer is no problem for my eyes.
I've tested both eyes individually & both are fine but when they're open at the same time then they will not combine to make things nice & sharp. The double vision makes me feel dizzy a lot of the time.

It sounds like you have neuropathy of the nerve that supplies the muscles that move the eyes. Normally the movement of the eyes is coordinated so the images from each eye combine to form a single image. With this type of neuropathy the movement isn't co-ordinated and the brain sees the images from each eye separately giving double vision. As the problem is coordination between the eyes, there is no problem when looking through one eye at a time.

The usual advice is to control blood sugars better, stop smoking and cut down on alcohol.

Thank you for that advice. My blood sugar was always O.K...now & then a little too high. But I've never smoked in my life & hardly ever touch alcohol so surely another reason must be behind why I got double vision.

@ronniet. I had the same thing but mine was not caused by diabetes but another condition.
Maybe my eye problems(double vision) are caused by the same problem you had with another condition. Any chance of you passing on that info to me please? It could be a useful help. Thanks.

@ronniet. I must say that I do believe that the most likely cause for your diplopia is probably what has been put forward here I was just trying to highlight that there are other causes. Double vision was the first symptom I had with Myasthenia Gravis as often the small muscles that control the tracking of the eyes are the first effected in fact I woke up one morning and could not see properly but then other symptoms arise which I have no doubt you would have been aware of by now for one thing it becomes extremely difficult to open your eyes or keep them open I used to tape mine open with sticky tape..

When I posted my comment it was that your post made me think of that time. And how easy some times it is for doctors to attribute things to existing conditions and over look other possibilities. MG is very rare and of course not something that springs to mind. And not something I would wish on anybody but if you do start to exhibit any of the other symptoms associated with it get it checked out.

I hated the double vision and the way it would throw me of balance like living inside a kaleidoscope I couldn't ride on a bus for more than a few minutes having to get off at every other stop and then wait for the next one. And I didn't drive for over two years. So you do have my sympathy and I hope that they can put this right for you soon or that it heals quickly if you use an eye patch over one eye it can help a bit like keeping one eye shut. Also I found by quickly alternating eyes you can to a degree simulate depth of vision allowing you to tell how far things are from you.

Sorry that was a bit long winded

John

John...Thank you so much for all that interesting & useful info. I honestly do not believe I have MG as a few of the problems you had have not affected me.I hope that most of your problems have got better thru' the years. In the meantime I will just have to hope that what the eye specialists told me really does happen...they said give it from 6 weeks up to about 6 months for the eye nerve causing the problem to heal itself.
I do have an MG(B) sports-car from the 1960's but at the moment because of my double vision the police here in Belgium have banned me from driving until I see properly again.

I didn't seriously think you did either but when people start talking of double vision it rings alarm bells for me.

I love the MG(B) bye the way I am really jealous hope you get to drive it again soon.

I'm on facebook & post a pic of my MGB now & again. All the best to you John.
