neuropathy experiences

Hello I am a new member on here and would like to hear your experiences of neuropathy. I am a 51 year old male and was diagnosed about 6 years ago with type 2 diabetes. I have never been able to control my blood sugars and they have always been on the high side as I just cannot diet, however recently I have been getting very bad neuropathy pains around my ribs and this has made me try to do something.

I am currently into week 6 of a low carb diet and eating soup for lunch and salad for dinner, but have noticed the neuropathy has got worse not better since actually controlling my blood sugars (it has gone down!). Currently taking 300mg gabapentin 3 x daily but still painful around ribs, not the typical place you would expect to get neuropathy either. Been checked by GP who thought it could be the gall bladder but after assessment he said it wasnt that thankfully. This is all getting me down now as don't know what to do next. Would be gratefulto hear your experiences of living with this and how did you cope etc. Many thanks.

Hi I dont know what assessment the doctor did but you should have an ultrasound scan. I dont want to scare you but in 2012 I mentioned discomfort around ribs at an appt for something else which I had for a year or so but which was becoming more noticeable. Got sent for an ultrasound, GP thinking gallbladder issue, but after ultrasound I had an immediate CT on same afternoon and had a tumour on my pancreas. I had a distal pancretectomy within 2 weeks and recovered well. However had it not been picked up so early the outcome could have been very different. Please dont think I am saying this is your problem but scans should be done. Surgeries are trying very hard to save money at the moment and sometimes you have to push for investigations.
Cant help you with neuropathy advice but someone will come along to help, I’m sure.

sad to hear that your neuropathy has gone worse lately, it is so great that your do the low carb eating style but remember it is a rather drastic change for ones body even when being healthy, your body needs to get used to the new kind of foods, it is important to remember to get a bit more salt when eating low carb, so a half to a whole teaspoon more salt daily is needed, because the low carb eating style do release a lot of fluid from one's cells, as the carbs bings rather much fluid in ones body and this obviously changes when one change to the very low carb eating style.

so drink a bit more than you used to and also remember a bit more salt..some also need a bit more potassium, but this can be dangerous to take as supplement because this can affect ones heart negatively , so there you ought find what kinds of foods contain a lot of pottassium and at the same time is low carbs ...https://www.nutritionadvance.com/10-low-carb-foods-high-potassium/
salt and pottassium are electrolytes that balances the liquid in ones cells and the body as a whole..so maybe a worsening in that balance could be the reason for the worsening of your nbeurophathy ..

I don´t have neurophathy but I have read repetedly that other members have bettered their neurophathy by eating the low carb style,

I can't have it often
There are quite a few neuropathy threads. Many sufferers have found R-ALA supplements to work with varying degrees of help. It certainly helped mine but didn't make it go away. It is bearable at the moment and no bad pain. Keeping BG down also helped. Not just HbA1c either but all the peaks as well. I agree with @PenguinMum that the ribs are unusual. It is mostly peripheral nerves but I suppose we are all different. I would beseech you to have this thoroughly investigated with some haste. Don't want to scare you but since it is highly unusual don't stuff around for too long or accept being fobbed off.

Hi @laughaminute51

The best thing I can think of doing is posting this link to a video by Dr Bernstein. He is a doctor with a practice that specialises in treating people with diabetes, and he is himself a type 1 diabetic for almost all his life. He has been running the clinic for around 40 years, I think, so his experience is vast. The video discusses his experiences treating neuropathy, and may explain why your pain has got worse as you have increased your blood glucose control.
