Hi, my dad has just been diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy he is really suffering with it. His a very active 74 year old but this is now stopping him from doing what he wants to. He is due to go on holiday soon, I am not sure how he will cope as he is unable to stand for very long. Does anyone else suffer the same and if so is there anything that helps? Thank you x

He might be able to stop it from getting worse if he follows some of the dietary advice from here. I find it novel that he has been diagnosed with neuropathy but not with diabetes before.

What are the particular symptoms of his neuropathy.

He should go on holiday as planned unless he needs the toilet a lot.

Good luck.

Thank you for replying, sorry I meant to put his had been diabetic for around 20 Years and has kept very well. He now suffers with pains in his legs, numb ness, unable to sleep due to it. He is concerned about holiday as he is unable to stand or walk far if the pains are bad. So queing ect he wouldn't be able to cope with. I just thought I would ask on his behalf if anyone knows of anything that improves the pain other than just medication x

Iam sorry squire, but unless you are medically trained and know jennieb's father, I think it is irresponsible to advise him to stop taking a prescribed drug, if indeed he even takes statins.
Jennieb, I suffer from neuropathy and take gabapentin. It doesn't take the pain away fully, but it does take the edge off it.
There are other drugs that also helps neuropathy pain, get your dad to ask his GP.

Hello Jennie, I am a new member here but may be able to help. I have neuropathy and have done for years now and the nurse years ago said to use OPSITE on the feet which surprised me but it worked. She said that is was discovered by accident that OPSITE prevented pain for neuropathy although they don't know why because it isn't usually used for that. It helped me for a long time, like your father I could hardly sleep with the pain but this took the pain away as soon as I used it. I recommended it to someone else for his wife and she had good results with it too. I used to have it on prescription when I was using it though I know you can buy it over the counter which might be worth trying to see if it helps. Hope you let us know if your father does try it and how he gets on.
