hope i spelt it ok,i have been suffering with it especially at night for some months now.yesterday i deliberately kept away from the carbs and i slept fine without the burning sensation in my feet and arms;today i am getting cold sensations in my feet is that a good sign that my nerves are starting to settle down?

If you have neuropathy, then you have had diabetes for some time.

That damage will take some time to repair, so staying away from the carbs is something you need to do for more than a day - you need a diet you can stick to for the rest of your life. You also need to get the long term blood sugar numbers down - you need to do regular finger prick blood tests to find out what the food you eat does in your body and learn to eat to your meter.

Look in the food/diet forums too.

Hi Spiral.

Neuropathy is nerve pain of one sort or another. It does not have to be related to Diabetes. Just because someone has Neuropathy doesn't mean that they are Diabetic. Here is a link to the British Neuropathy website.

There is the condition of Diabetic Neuropathy which is a complication of Diabetes. Not the same thing.

Ken.

I have made an assumption that if someone is posting on a diabetes website, then it is related to diabetes, not always the case I know  But m_cooper is diabetic, was referring to staying away from carbs and has posted about his feet before, I have made some assumptions based on his previous posts, sorry of those assumptions are incorrect m_cooper :)

I have some issues with my own feet and I'm not sure if they are neuropathy related or due to compression problems. I'm waiting for an appointment with the diabetic podiatrist.

Spiral. My apologies. :?

Assumptions..... You may have assumed that what I posted was a criticism of your post. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your assumptions about m_cooper and Diabetic Neuropathy are probably perfectly correct.

What I was attempting to correct, for the benefit of others, perhaps not clearly enough was this introductory statement which was in your post:
" If you have neuropathy, then you have had diabetes for some time. "

I know that it was directed at m_cooper. However, this website is not just viewed by Diabetics. It is viewed around the World by Diabetic's and non-Diabetic's alike. Anyone reading that statement who has Neuropathy could then assume that they were then a Diabetic ? Not so at all. That is why I was attempting to show the difference between Neuropathy and Diabetic Neuropathy.

My own personal experience shows that in the 70's I had Neuropathy due to a spinal injury at work. I still have bouts of this sometimes even now. It is not Diabetic Neuropathy.
I was not a Diabetic at that time, but if I had read your statement then I might have assumed I was ?

Hope this clears things up.

Ken. :)

Couple of things...

Neuropathy is defined as nerve damage or dysfunction. It may or may not result in pain, or a variety of other symptoms.

I would hope that having "Diabetes.co.uk" plastered at the top of every page would indicate to any guest visitor that information contained on the page may quite likely relate to diabetes?

Indeed ,Kegstore that is very true.....but,just because we are diabetics does not mean that we can't have other conditions unrelated to diabetes.I have a neuropathy at the moment caused be a trapped nerve in my neck. This was the result of an accident, nothing to do with the fact that i am a diabetic. So it is not a diabetic neuropathy, merely a physical neuropathy of another cause.

The joy of written words on message boards  If were were chatting over a coffee this would have been sorted within a minute or so :?

Neuropathy is a subject close to my heart at the moment, I have posted about my feet :| I have some loss of sensation and my podiatrist couldn't work out whether the symptoms were related to neuropathy or compression as they are a mixture of both. My GP suggested the diabetic foot clinic might refer me to a neurologist, I have not heard from them just yet, I think this is something to chase up tomorow.

I think I read elsewhere on these boards that it takes several months for diabetic neuropathy to start to reverse once glucose levels were normalising. This is a long term strategy. I hope we have not scared you off m_cooper :D Have your questions been answered?
