Never Hungry

I noticed today that I don't feel hunger. In fact I can't remember the last time I felt hungry, and seem to have lost physical indicators that I need to eat  Even at hypo level, there are no symptoms of hunger at all.

It's not a loss of appetite as such, I eat to refuel but can go for hours and hours in between meals without any internal reminder that I need to eat, so if I'm absorbed in something or just plain busy, I forget to eat  And don't feel any need to eat, it's hard to describe . Previously I knew that food was needed, and experienced intense hunger with hypos.

I think in retrospect this has been the case for a couple of years now. Has anyone else experienced this, and has the feeling of hunger returned ?

Since I stopped eating snacks between meals I rarely get hungry, however I do still get the hunger feeling when getting going low, had this happen the other night even though my bg was 3.7

I have a pronounced reduction in hunger when I low carb. The more consistent and strict I am, the less hunger feelings I have. For a while there is a kind of "ghost" hunger that is just psychological, then that goes too.

It makes me think I have never actually experienced hunger, only carb withdrawal.

same, before low carb and diagnosis, I'd have a big carby tea and an hour later I was back at the fridge and pity the person if they were standing in my way.
now, I don't get the starving hungry feeling

I don't get hungry since lowering the carbs. I missed lunch today even after doing my circuit training this morning - just didn't feel the need to eat.

Well I used to be like all of you. When I reduced carbs I stopped feeling hungry. However, I've just started taking some new medication and I'm hungry all the time now, regardless of how much fat I eat. It isn't very nice.:(

I wrote this post earlier this year
Personally, I miss the feeling of hunger and anticipation of a good meal that I had when I'd missed a meal or for example been out for a long cold walk with a delicious casserole awaiting me. It's now only with very low glucose levels that I will feel very hungry
Actually, I very rarely feel that hungry with a hypo and am often reluctant to treat because of that.
I certainly don't classify myself as someone who eats a low carb diet.

Never been hungry..never ate cos hungry.. Just eat cos have too!! Been this way.. Sorry 50+ years now.. Never changed and don't want it to either!!

I used to be hungry all the time.
Nothing filled me or satisfied me. It was like living with a black hole inside me.

Now I experience hunger before lunch and evening meals (but never before the first food of the day). Sometimes I have to eat before bed, in case The Hunger won't let me sleep.

I think it's whatever you get used to.
I don't feel hungry if I'm working, food was really just something to pass the time for me.
And I must have passed a lot of time!
I went low calorie, so I'm conscious that i should eat, but not overeat.
I eat some carbs, I find it helps me longterm if I keep the ability to eat them without them taking me high.
But I never find I need to go back and eat more.
Probably the opposite in fact, if I eat a low carb meal, I feel I need a little bit of carbs to round off the meal.
I've worked all day today, I was fine with ryvita for breakfast, salad for lunch, 3 chicken drumsticks with a salsa sauce, french beans, and baked sweet potato and swede slices.
Ok all day, sitting here not working, I could eat, but don't need to.
I may succumb to a bit of fruit later though.

It's an anti-depressant - citalopram. It says on the leaflet that it may cause weight gain, and I can see it would if I ate till I was satisfied, because I never am!
IMO, they can put on weight without eating, if you still have a hunger side effect after a couple of weeks, I would see the Dr to swap, there is no good or bad one, it's what suits your system and it's trial and error

Thank you.

I have felt that way for years often forgot to eat for a day or more while working shifts. The first thing my wife used to say time was "have you eaten".
No idea how I was suddenly 20 stone.. I'm sure I eat more than I used to and have lost loads of weight.

I used to eat two days food in the evening.

Going on Metformin and low carbing has really knocked the edge off my appetite.before diagnosis I was like a bad tempered Trex in search of it's next meal. Now I get bored with eating half way through my meals , frequently leave stuff on plate ( unheard of before- sometimes I'd feel physically sick shovelling the rice and pasta in but inviting leave it ) and the only time I really fancy something is round that time of the month when I may have an extra small snack at bedtime. I've lost three stone since May so not complaining.

Thanks guys, that's interesting - I hadn't connected it with the low carb eating ,and precious carb intake affecting hunger . Thinking back it started to happen before I changed my diet, but that wasn't, I think, when I was suffering from depression and that's why at that time.

I'm glad it's not just me though, I was beginning to think it was another manifestation of Just Plain Weird :D

@zand , I feel for you . I've never been on Citalopram, but haas friend who was and she said it was like a compulsive hunger that was never satisfied, even when she felt nauseous :( She did change to another one fairly early on because she was piling on the weight and did fine on that . Apparently, it's a side effect that affects some people and not others  So as has been suggested, it may be that you need to go back to the GP . I hope you are feeling a bit better ?
