New Diagnosis

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes last week and given an appointment to see a Dietician today, arranged through my GP surgery. This has just been cancelled and I have been told I cannot see a Dietician until my first "review" which will be sometime in February!! I can't believe I have to wait until then.

I am 62 years of age, have mountains of recipes and do not want any more! I just want to know how to adapt my existing recipes to suit and how to read food packaging labels (i.e. Carbs of which sugars..... Fats of which saturates) to help me understand what to avoid from now on!
 
what were your numbers? this will tell how hard you reduce the carbs.
generally,cut grain=rice,etc, - grain product= breads, pasta, pastries, cereals – starchy veg=potato, corn, etc – sugary stuff, fruit and juice
for fats, cut grain oil and margarine.. have healthy real butter, olive oil and coconut oil

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You will spend a lot of time reading food labels and causing chaos in the supermarket! You can ignore the "of which sugars" on the whole. Look for "total carbohydrate" in the UK. (Other countries differ). Anything over 10g per 100g should be left on the shelf. Ideally, look for no more than 5g per 100g. All carbs convert to sugar once in the system, not just refined sugars. Fats and Sat Fats are fine for diabetics. Fat does very little to raise blood sugar levels. In fact, you need to be VERY careful with anything that says low fat because very often they add sugar to make it taste better - read the labels for total carbs.

Please don't worry about a delayed appointment with a nurse. You will get all the information you need from this forum. We are all diabetics of one sort or another. Your nurse probably isn't. Have you any idea what your diagnosis blood results were?

Maybe your delayed appointment is a lucky reprieve - it gives you time to find out more about what really works for people on this site.
 
Just get a book on the glycemic load of foods. Counting carbs is not accurate because no 2 carbs raise your blood sugar the same. A good little book is

Hi @Lynytoot , welcome :)

Yes I agree with @nancyb , I had a six week delay between diagnosis and seeing the DN, by which time I was well into LCHF and getting my blood sugars under control with just diet and exercise. You can do the same.
