Well blow me down...

I went for my 3 month review with my DSN this morning to talk about my latest HbA1c and Cholesterol results. I took along a load of printouts to evangelise the low carb way. Thought I was going to have a battle. Not a bit of it.

She spent the whole half hour asking me how the hell I did it and that she was pretty speechless when she saw my results. So I explained and told her to read the printouts as they would tell her what I've been up to the last 4 months. After giving her a brief guide to LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) she said it was even more impressive considering I have normalised my Cholesterol and upped my good HDL in the process. She said my control is brilliant especially my two hour results. I said I was worried that as I'd done so well they'd take my Metformin away and she said "no way it obviously works so don't worry"

Net result she wants me to go talk to the surgeries diabetic specialist gp to tell him what I did and booked a double appointment for me to do so and, get this, prior to my appointment she is going to tell the gp all about my efforts and recommend to him that I get test strips because "the evidence is there for anyone to see" that it works.

I am so pleased not just for me but for new patients who she'll now see and pass the message onto.

YEAH!!!!!! If anyone deserved this it's you! I am thrilled to bits for you, you have earned this with your dogged determination. Well done.

Success with educating your DSN and the chance being given to you to talk and show your DS GP the same!
As you say its the way forward for others as well as yourself...
Do keep us all posted as to how you go with your double appt with your diabetic specialist GP .
Anna.x :D

That's a real result xyzzy and you'll have done a lot of good for others who attend the same practice. Maybe we can change the world - one DSN at a time.

How completely and utterly fabulous!!!

And so........the revolution begins!

We're off to the 'Dietetics' specialist on Wednesday...bet we can't do the same!

Thanks to all of you!

Here are the extracts and docs I printed out for her. For the extracts I did a cover page telling her the urls's to go to if she wanted to download the full docs.

Gave her all of this doc (thanks Phoenix) and highlighted the section about carbohydrate control and Low GI being important

http://www.york.ac.uk/media/healths... Guidelines for Practice Paul Pipe Thomas.pdf

Gave her all of this doc (thanks again Phoenix) which is the new joint US / European self management position statement. I highlighted the "Patient Centred Approach" bit and the "Approach to management of hyperglycaemia" diagram

http://www.diabetologia-journal.org/files/Inzucchi_et_al.pdf

Next she got page S23 & S24 from the ADA 2012 position statement and I highlighted the 130g / day RDA recommendation paragraph on S24

http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/35/Supplement_1/S11.full.pdf

She got the conclusions (page 20) of the 2007 IDF Guideline for Management of Post Meal glucose as an "Eat to your meter" message

http://www.idf.org/webdata/docs/Guideline_PMG_final.pdf

Of course she got the Moderate Restricted Carbohydrate diet pages found in the Swedish health services "Kost Vid Diabetes" position doc! I put together a little paragraph drawing the distinction between a 30% total carb approach and what is currently recommended in the UK

http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...=/search?q=Kost+Vid+Diabetes&hl=en&prmd=imvns

and as an "example" low carb high fat diet I gave her the print out of Dr Annika Dahlqvist's diet who seems to be the originator of the Swedish moderate restricted diet.

Up the revolution!

May I pinch those things to do Show & Tell at the Dietetics on Wednesday, please?

Nice to see York being pro-active. My oldest graduated there - Masters in Chemistry. It's a good Uni.

Julie there is nothing really to pinch. I just printed out the relevant docs and pages then just did a separate page which just had all the urls to the full docs i.e the ones I just posted.

xyzzy, you sure did well.

Our very own Che Guevara of the Diabetics Liberation Front. :D

Let's hope that the small ripples caused by individual conversions within the health teams eventually result in an acceptance that the outdated advise given to many diabetics at the moment can be just plain dangerous and ineffective, and that the die hard "old ways are the right way" brigade are forced to help rather than hinder many diabetics in their fight against this rotten condition.

Yep same to you. I just posted on your thread

Well done to you xyzzx.
Nice to see that low carbing is being touted around the UK a bit more. Mind you, Im not sure that I would class less than 60g per day as true low carbs? However if it works for you, good on you. I have been low carbing for some time at less than 40-50 max at the behest of my DSN, She was very pro LC and I was supporteed all the way when I first started, so the revolution has been going a while but just a bit slowly! One of the other ones was sceptical but hadn't a leg to stand on when she saw my results. I dunno that I would go to what you call a moderate carb diet if I was just dignosed though. I think I might have been in trouble withy that. I followed the advice on here from people like Fergus/Trinkwasser/Dennis/sugarless sue and a few others I better not mention!

Low carb in one form or another is the way to go forward, one day the NHS will have to recognise that it is a valid alternative to the rubbish dietary advice the NHS gives to most diabetics. Plenty of carbs indeed???

WOW! Fantastix news xyzzy You are quite lucky in having a nurse open to new ideas but all the hard work and preparation
paid off, in fact probably exceeded your wildest dreams!

I am sure these results will go further than your own Practice. That is one in the eye for the specialist DSN who refused to listen last time!

I hope you are duly proud of yourself becaue we are all proud of you.

Congratulations xyzzy :D Hopefully the message will spread outwards through your GP and other patients will benefit from your experience.

Well done xyzzy, good result mate. You obviously hit just the right balance and type of carbs for you!
