Hello everyone, You seem like a friendly bunch on here. I was diagnosed with type 2 and high cholesterol on the same day last August. I'm fed up because I've never smoked, rarely drink, do a reasonable amount of exercise, have excellent blood pressure, have always been skinny and have, according to my diabetes nurse, an excellent diet. So, I've done everything right but still have both these problems. At the moment I'm on diet control which is difficult as my diet was already excellent apparently. So far I've tried cutting out pretty much all cakes, puddings, pastry etc even though I'm supposed to able to have them all in moderation as I had been doing. Both my cholesterol and HbA1c had gone down a little at my recent, and first, 6 month check up. My main problem is I am hungry! I've always eaten a lot [of the good stuff, not cake etc but always been skinny] and I can't afford to lose any more weight. I lost 8lbs over the 6 months as a result of cutting out all the bad stuff. I'm right at the lower end of those ideal height/weight charts. What I would like to know is what can I fill up on? Breakfast is mostly 40g of porridge made with semi skimmed mik, a small handful of raisins and cinnamon. If I have that at 8pm for eg I'll be starving by 10pm. Normally I would grab something like a hunk of [usually wholemeal] bread. If I do that kind of thing now it will mean I'm eating a whole lot of carbs. I'm not actually on a carb counting regime at the moment so will that matter? If it does matter, what can I snack on that will fill me up but not be high in carbs and/or fat? Thanks in anticipation of your help. skinnylizzie.

Skinny Lizzie,What can you snack on that will fill you up and not be high in carbs. or fat?-----Put "Extend Bar" in your search engine and check out this site. The lady behind this company is a doctor and invented these snacks and I have been very satisfied with them for the past 3 or 4 years. They have many different bars ,shakes and snack foods.I sometimes have low sugar and wake up at 3AM with the sweats and shakes.I take a teaspoon of sugar to stabilize me and then eat a delicious chocolate Extend Bar.This stabilizes my system for at least 8 hours and I can get a good night's sleep. They even sell ingredients from which you can make your own milk shake.--------They are located in the middle of the U.S. but probably ship all over the world.I hope this helps you.---Sundowner

Thanks Sundowner. I'm definitely going to give them a try. It seems I can get them from Amazon.

Hello Lizzie. Those Extend bars might be fine, but I would worry that they are yet another way to extract money from diabetics; however, if you can afford them, like them, and they don't spike your BG, that's fine. I think you'll have trouble avoiding hunger if you try and eat low carb AND low fat; you need low carb to keep your BG down, but you have to get energy from somewhere, so that will have to be from fat and protein. Good snacks include nuts, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, chunks of ham or other meat and suchlike. You'll probably find that a higher level of fat in your meals will leave you feeling satisfied for longer, anyway.

Thanks Sketcher, You've hit my problem right on the head. Yes, I think it is the fact that I'm cutting down on both carbs and fats that is leaving me hungry. The trouble is, I don't seem to have much choice. My cholesterol level was 8, now down to 7 and that is still massively high so I have to watch my fat intake very carefully. I was already eating a low fat diet because I've always been concerned about having a healthy diet so cutting down even further is difficult. I'm on statins which helps. I do eat, in moderation, the good fats - nuts etc. and oily fish. I sometimes think that as I'm so skinny, eat well and so on, but still have these problems that my body processes food in a very strange way!

Hi skinnylizzie

What a dilema and am not sure as not medically qualified yet I do know from medics I have talked to that nuts and seeds are ok and meat

and there is I believe a debate about whether 1. fat makes us fat and 2. whether fat alone affect cholesterol so mayb try a little more fat in meats and nuts and fish (nuts and fish fats if you going for oily fish is healthy fats as I call them)

I snack on nuts all the time and thats with the agreement of my nurse who is supervising my weight loss and of course aware of my diabetes and I have been told 500 cals a day of nuts/seeds totally ok and thats accepting I am going to be cutting out all complex carbs

keep asking questions and

Thanks Vicky, I expect I'll get there in the end. I suppose we all have to work out what works for us. There's no one-size-fits-all.

oh if only there was a one fits all

we would have it sorted in a flash

baby steps same as me am just starting on this journey of finding way to be in control of this condition instead of it being in control of me

happy eating
