Hi

I have been reading posts in the forum for a while now, and have found them very useful. I am Type 2, diagnosed just less than one year ago. I started on Metformin and diet straight away as my BG was 29.5 at the outset. I was eventually taking 1 500mg 3 times per day and my BG dropped to 7.4 by 3 months ago. However, as the Metformin was upsetting my stomach, I was changed onto 1 slow release Metformin twice a day.

My last test, after 2 months on the slow release, had increased slightly to 7.8. A few weeks ago, my diabetic nurse increased me to 1 500 SR Metformin 3 times per day. I am getting on OK with this but confused as to when I am supposed to take the tablets. The nurse didn't give me any particular instructions so I have been taking them 3 times per day after food. But I notice the leaflet says to take the tablets just once a day. This has left me a bit confused.

According to the BNF this is the dose,

Dose Initially 500 mg once daily, increased every 10–15 days, max. 2 g once daily with evening meal; if control not achieved, use 1 g twice daily with meals, and if control still not achieved change to standard-release tablets

You need to speak to your doctor and clarify with him/her what they want you to do.

Hi

Many thanks for your help. I will get on to my nurse about it, straight after New Year. I thought there was something a bit strange.
