Type of diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic several years ago and though I'm not on any medications for it, I still test my glucose levels regularly. I have since diagnosis lost 25lbs and have for the most part kept it off. I'm a 52 year old male, 5'6" and now weigh 187lbs. The weight does seem high but I do lift weights so I have considerable muscle mass. All my excess weight is around my belly.

I recently read "The Obesity Code " by Jason Fung as well as "The Complete Guide To Fasting " by Jason Fung and Jimmy Moore. Quite frankly, the Obesity Code should be required reading by anyone with type2 diabetes or anyone in the healthcare field that deals with diabetics or people with metabolic syndrome. Both books were very enlightening.

I have already done a 7 day fast and I do shorter fasts during the week. I plan on another 7 day fast at the end of this month. During my 7 day fast, my blood glucose readings dropped consistently and my lowest reading was 3.8 with no signs of going hypo. Once I ended my fast however, my numbers seemed to go much higher than my pre-fast numbers.

I look forward to getting into reading the type 2 threads as well as diet and nutrition. I really am interested in fasting and the results others on the forum are having with it.

Cheers.

Hi @Troubled1, and welcome to the forum. You appear to be doing very well with managing your condition, probably you could maybe help others here when sharing your experiences; there certainly is a variety of approaches as you will soon find if you have a read around the various threads.

There is a section on Fasting in the Food and Nutrition sub-forum listings, which might be of interest to you. Try here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/fasting.78/

good luck :)

Welcome to the forum. Having good muscle mass is a good way to assist with control. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the warm welcome. The weightlifting has helped my bg readings remain more stable but the biggest takeaway has been a reduction in pain from a sore lower back, sore knee and foot. My initial weight loss had me go from a men's large t-shirt to a small but since I started weightlifting 3 1/2 years ago, I had to move up to a medium as the chest and arms were too tight. That's a good thing!

I do take some supplements for lifting (whey protein and Creatine) and I did notice that the Creatine had quite an effect on lowering my bg levels. I actually went hypo 4x in one week. Since I have now started fasting, I rarely use the supplements and my numbers are actually a little higher now than before I'm now in the 6-8 range whereas before fasting I was in the 4.8-6 range.
At first I was a little concerned but I know once I get rid of more belly fat, my numbers should improve. In the last 6 months I have really been concentrating on my health. In December, 1 week before Christmas I got streptococcus. That was my cue to quit smoking. I did take up vaping but haven't had a cigarette in almost 6 months. I plan to stop vaping by the end of the year.
My last visit to my Dr had him say that reaching a normal BMI would be nearly impossible due to my frame size and muscle mass. In his opinion getting into the low to mid 170's would be ideal as long as I kept the muscle mass.
My next target is my slowly increasing LDL cholesterol. I'm hopeful that my fasting will get those numbers back to where they should be.
My Dr seems to be itching to get me on some kind of meds.
