Hi everyone.

I've just been diagnosed TII, with 48, 49 on 2nd blood test.
They've put me straight on Metformin tabs.
With very basic advise of reduce certain foods, carbs. I have now stopped all my choc, cakes, ice cream..., yes I've a very sweet tooth...

Now I'm trying to get my head around all the can doe's and don'ts...

Have found these forums most interesting and helpful.

I'm struggling regarding how or what monitor to buy to monitor owns levels, any suggestions please? As they've not mentioned doing any self monitoring, but comments I've read seem to say its better to do, to understand your actual levels.

Look forward to more in the forum's, thanks for all your helpful comments.

Hi Mo R and welcome to the forums. The meter info has been collated by Rachox, one of our members, and is below. If it's any help I was given a Gluco RXQ free by the manyfacturers (you just need to ask), and buy the test strips from my local pharmacy. The test strips are where the expense lies. I've never used another meter so can't compare it with anything.

You are only just in diagnosis territory so with a bit of luck you'll see improvement really quickly.

"Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews.

Links to the strips for future orders:

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular:

The strips are to be found here:

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hi everyone.

Can anyone advise if they've had these side effects with taking Metformin meds?...

Heavy chested, pains, tightness, episodes of feeling feint, dizzy occasionally, which are intermittent since 10am today... ( couple hrs after taking meds).. .
As this has increased every day, to really bad today and I'm on day 5 of meds, didn't have any of these issues before taking them.

Just want to know if its a mojor effect to stop meds temporarily. .

Thanks for your time.
Mo.
