I felt the same. Receiving the diagnosis made a lot of the way I was feeling make sense. My gp kept on telling me stress is making me feel unwell and I must go to a psychiatrist until ... He tested my blood! It's hard because everything in the shops and restaurants contains loads of carbs and sugar. I have opted for LCHF and it's really working. I'm steadily losing weight and have good control of my Bg. I feel much better and sleep better. I brag with my non diabetic friends that my bg control is probably better than theirs because they are frequently overloading their bodies with sugar! I still have a lot to learn about planning ahead for my diet but I am positive and embracing it! I made my first diabetic desert - tiramisu - and it was divine. Don't feel bad, from what I've read it's in the genes and makes you more susceptible to gaining weight, then the weight gain exasperates the situation. I'm glad this has happened in a way because now I have to eat properly and be more healthy. Maybe I can even come off the metformin. Good luck, with this forum you'll never feel alone!

also, just to add, I feel really ashamed of myself that I let this happen (
First and foremost, dont ever be ashamed to be scared, and secondly thank you for coming here, but please go and get yourself seen to, you know the complications that can arise, so please get to your gp asap, ive had type 1 diabetes for 9 years and i was in denial for 8 of those, though i did still take my insulin, please i urge you to get on medication. And stay on this forum as we are all here to help you process this. We all went through the fear and insisting that no we are not diabetic, but please dont be scared, yes its hard but there is alot of help on here for you xx stay strong and stay positive xx

curlynurse, I relate to what you're feeling and I agree with Brunneria. My HbA1c was 90 at the time of diagnosis in May 2015 and, because I am an adult and was overweight, the assumption was that I was Type 2, which was incorrect - I fit the LADA category as indicated by a GAD test.

My catch phrase throughout this initial period of shock, confusion and fear has been "I'm sorry but that just doesn't make sense to me yet. Do you have some recent information I could read to help me understand what you're saying?" I found advice from the well-meaning health professionals overwhelming and hours of talking at me meant I was only remembering parts of what they were saying. I know the DC nurse, dietician and specialist are providing the best advice they know and I appreciate their care, but they are constrained by rules and knowledge that is approved within a conservative health system.

This forum has helped me look beyond the standard advice of a national health approach and try out things that make better sense to me and fit within what I know about how I respond to certain foods etc. I'm on insulin (Lantus & NovoRapid) and managing to keep Novo to a minimum by eating low carb foods and considering nutrient value (www.optimisingnutrition.wordpress.com). I have lost 20kg over 7 months and am feeling healthier eating this way than I have been for years. It feels as though my journey of discovery about diabetes is really about discovering me (and it's about time) All the best in your discovery about you - this forum is a safe place in which to explore.

So as my title says, Im in denial. Havent been to dr`s yet, but checked my urine in work on monday, as I thought I had urine infection, and had 5+++++ of glucose!!! I then did my BM, it was 15.5mmol!! Im a nurse, so was able to test myself. My BM this am, before any food was 11.1mmol. Im scared, [etrified, I know I need to go to doc`s, but I refuse to be a diabetic!!! Did anyone else feel like this????
I suspect most of us felt this way at first! Calm down, honey, but you MUST get yourself seen by a doctor and referred, hopefully to a good specialist diabetes nurse. I felt so panicked, out of my depth, angry and depressed. I am pretty clued up on nutritional matters, it was my profession, but my mind refused to co-operate in planning a sensible diet. Friends will give you all sorts of conflicting advice, even the medics disagree. But this site will offer sound and balanced views. It took me months to get my head round it. There is so much in the news at the moment about diabetes, but just concentrate on yourself, what is going to be the right path for YOU. We are all different, and we try different approaches to keeping diabetes under control. Don't let it freak you out any more, you are not going into a decline, life is good once you get to grips with things, and it won't rule you or define what you can and can't do.

as a nurse you know what you have to do.
Lots of support here for you if you chose to take it.
If you were a patient and your nurse did nothing that would be neglect so don't neglect yourself and just take a deep breath and get on with it.
