Hi all

I got tagged by the GP as being Diabetic, about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Since then I've lost about 3/4 of a Stone, stopped all sugar in my Tea & Coffee and radically changed my eating habits. The diet is still on & going OK, although the weight loss is slowing down, but thats to be expected.

I bought a meter to test my blood. I've had it about a week, and am slightly confused about the results.

In general i get a reading of around 5.8 before meals, and around 7.2, two hours after meals. Once it was 10.4, but tht was about an hour after a meal, so I guess that doesn't count (or is to be expected).

However, sometimes when I wake up of a morning (usually around 6am) the reading is 7.2 , then about an hour later, 7.8, and yet I havn't eaten for at least 8 hours. Can someone explain this to me? I go for breakfast in the works canteen, at 8:30am, and two hours later the reading is is about 5.8 or lower.

Confused, please advise.

corker what you are experiencing happens to us all to an extent and is called the dawn phenomenon... basically what happens is at around 4 - 5am your body begins to prepare its self to wake.. a whole load of hormons are released into your blood stream such as; epinephrine, cortisol and most importantly glucagon... all of these to an extent although glucagon is the primary protagonist cause your liver to release glucose into your blood stream to help get you ready for the day... in a non-diabetic your insulin response would deal with the increase in glucoses.. in diabetics the effect is more pronounced.

Ah ha !

Thank you, this is very interesting. You see I have been waking up around 4 or 5am every morning for months, and waking up with a muzzy headache...I guess it maybe related? I usually go back to sleep.

I've started a regime to test myself immediately I get out of bed (usually 6am) then just before each meal (8:30am, 12 noon and 7pm) 1 hour and two hours after each meal, for seven days, just to figure out what I can and can't eat and the quantitis(todays Cous Cous at lunch time sent my BG level to 8.9, 2 hours after lunch, and its just started coming down, a whole three and a half hours after lunch.....

Thank you
