can someone help please!! I was doing tattooing, but had enough and have now gone into being a scaffolders labourer, so I have gone from lazy job to a very physical 1, im 50 years of age,i have had type 1 diabetes since 1998, I have levimar units of 45 a day, 20 at 5.30 am,, then 25 on route home around 5.30pm, this is the same as what I had when I was tattooing, I have only done 2 days but have had 4 hypos, its very physical work, I have cut down on my nova rapid by quite a bit also, before I would have 15=16 units with my sandwich and small pork pie for lunch, now im eating more(because the job is physical) but having less insulin, can someone tell me if I need to cut down on levimar? I had porridge at 5am with 10 units of nova,as my sugar levels were on 19!! not normally anywhere near that, usually around 9 in the morning, but by 9.30am I was having a hypo(2.1) I had lucozade and a banana, then at 10.30am I ate a sandwich bag of crisps but 4 units of insulin(which is very low for me) then at 1.30pm I had a bag of pops crisps and an apple, as we was leaving at 3.50pm my levels was on 3.1,, this is where im lost? less levimar? please help....

Being on an MDI regime like the one your on really requires some knowledge of carb counting and dose adjustment.

Not everyone has access to such resources I realize....

the first thing to do when your activity levels increases over long periods of time is to adjust your background insulin, so your Levemir. Levemir is really suited to such adjustments.

you shouldn't really be changing your meal time insulin doses to cater for increased activity, in the first instance anyway.....

you should inquire about DAFNE or sign up http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/

you will likely need to reduce your morning Levemir by a certain percentage and possibly your evening dose too.......

as your not educated yet on dose adjustment, you could start off by chopping say 10% of your doses now, and if you can doing a basal test during the day, so a carb free lunch or breakfast for example....

there is lots to explain and not enough time to do it in........

any questions, please ask....
