New Low Carb Rice Products

Hi,

Keep a look out in Tesco and Sainsbury's 2nd week of June. As there will be a new low carb rice range being launched by Batchelors foods.

5 new flavoured rices will be launched, egg fried, pilau, mexican, oriental and golden, with mushroom and mediterranean to follow later in the year.

All rices contain less than 30% carbohydrates, so a big difference compared to standard plain rice and all taste really great!

They will reach the other supermarkets at some point also, but Tesco and Sainburys are getting them first.

Keep a look out, worth a try if you are trying to cut down on your carbs!!
 
That's brilliant, thanks - me and my mum were proper carboholics so anything that means I can do her favourite mushroom risotto is fine by me!
 
The mushroom rice is particularly nice! Its very butterly and has tender mushrooms in it!!

We tasted the new Batchlors range against Uncle Bens and all are a great improvement. Plus the Batchelors range are very low in salt. The FSA have realeased a lot of new salt guidlines which we all have to work towards when we develop recipes. So the new Batchlors range are all very low in salt and only contain natural flavours!!

I'll keep you posted with launch dates.
 
What Glycemic Index / Load Rating are you Attributing to this product?.
You suggest that all recipes contain less than 30% Carbs but of what Nett weight ?
Have you actually had field trials with diabetics and what responses did you have.

Hi Dave,

As these products are not specifically aimed at diabetics we wouldn't do any field trials. The only consumer testing we do is with current Batchelors consumers to see if they like the products. We do these across the counrty to make sure we have good products which our customers want to buy.

The pouches will be 250g each. They contain precooked rice, seasoning and vegetable pieces. Our nutritional information is compiled in house at our labs. They aren't theoretically calculated, they use specific tests to calculate all the data so it should be more reliable. All the flavours contain less than 30% carbohydrates due to the way the rice is cooked within the pouches.

As these are specific for diabetes, we won't be putting the GI on to packs.

The only reason I posted my initial message was to advertise that a "regular product" will be on sale in the coming months and contains less carbs than products on the shelves.

Have a try of them and see what you think.

Dr Nic ...........From testing i already know that rice whether white or wholemeal will elevate my BS.

Diabetics as a large customer group need information on the product to be able to make informed choices, to that end it would make sense for the food industry to be taking the point on board or risk isolating a customer group.

Its a step . . . but 30% x 250g is more than my usual daily carb allowance and about twice what I can get away with in an evening meal

What I want to know is, whatever happened to Salmon and Spinach soup? I can't even remember if it was a Batchelors product but it was one of the few packet soups I enjoyed
 
Hi Nic,

Is the 250g sachet intended to be a single portion? If so then it represents 75g carbs but could be of use to someone who can manage on somewhere around 150g carbs per day. Unfortunately for me it is too close to my daily target of 100g.

But I wish you the best of luck with the product.
 
I appreciate there may be other ingredients but 250g is five times what I would consider a portion of rice, my basmati rice packet suggests a portion size of between 75g and 100g, therefore 250g is between 2.5 and three times those recommendations.

The question therefore should be, what individual portion size are the manufacturers recommending? I agree with sixfoot some idea of GI would also be nice on food packaging, if Warburton's can take the initiative with their low GI offerning, why can't other 'food' providers follow suit? GI isn't just a clue for people with diabetes, in my mind it's as useful as, if not more so, the traffic light system currently being used.

Not being a food technician it would be interesting to find out, in lay man's (should that be person?) terms, how the carb content had been reduced but I guess that would be a trade secret and therefore confidential.

Is the 250g wet weight or dry weight? I had assumed wet, but if it is dry then that would probably feed a family of six!
 
I know that people buy these packets of rice, pasta, noodles etc. but it is only a convenience food. Cooking basmati or wild rice is not a chore and then you can add your own vegetables and flavourings. You know what you are getting and what portion suits you personally. It works out cheaper too.

They are 250g pouches, and are aimed as 1 pouch for a snack and or split between 2/3 as part of a main meal. 250g for a pouched product is a standard portion. I know it seems huge, but its standard! These products aren't aimed at diabetics, but they are useful for diabetics becasue they have lower carbs than standard rice products. Also we make sharwoods side of plate sagaloo (sp?), and tarka dall (sp?) and there's a couple of others in the range, which have just been launched and are also less than 25% carbs. So also worth a try.

You don't open a packet of bisciuts and think, I must now eat the whole pack. The rices should stay fresh in the fridge for a few days, or just eat a small portion and share the rest out to your family.

I only originally posted this message to alert people of a normal type of food which is an option for diabetics. When I had to eat gluten and diary free food I craved normal foods which were safe.

I don't make the rules unfortunately, otherwise I would make all ready meals contain zero sugar, low carb and additive free, and alwasys list the Gi, as I know my husband would find it life changingly useful. But for now, I'll let you know if products which aren't aimed for diabetics but are suitable if they are low carb, and hopefully it will make someones life a bit easier.
