Hi, I got diagnosed with diabetes 6 weeks ago with a blood sugar count of 20.9 and was put on metformin tablets which I now take 2000 mg per day. I visited the doctor again yesterday and my blood sugar levels were still high at 16. He has also put me on Gliclazide Tablets, 2 x 80mg tablets per day. I am a little worried as I have changed my diet and my sugar levels are still pretty high. Will my levels go down now I'm taking these tablets as well? Is it normal to take such an high dose of both tablets at the beginning? Please help!

First of all, you say you have changed your diet....is it a diet that will help lower your Bg readings ? The medication on it's own will not drastically lower levels, however with dietary changes as well that should improve matters.

As for the dose......you are now on the Max dose of Metformin and the next step is usually Gliclazide. the Max dose of that is 320mg per day in divided doses. You are on half that dose, so it isn't really that high. The levels you quote mean you need to get them lowered by whatever means at first to stabilise at more normal levels. Gliclazide is very effective as it forces the Pancreas to produce more Insulin. I was once on max doses of both but with better control was able to stop Glic and reduce Met by half. :D

Your Bg levels should go down hopefully but as with everything in life nothing is guaranteed !

BTW........this is the advice we think works.

Hi Cugila,
You say you reduced your Met dose by half. Can I ask how did you know you were taking too much Met?
I take 2 Met regular tablets a day (one breakfast and one with evening meal) but since losing 2 stone in weight and cutting my carbs I am now finding I am having to eat every 3 hours whether I am hungry or not to keep my levels up. I can go from 7 or 8 at the 2 hour point to just over 4 by 3 to 3 and half hours when I am working. It's not a problem in the evening when relaxing.
Just wondered if anyone had experienced this.
Thanks
Angie

I knew I was overmedicated, especially in the evening. I was continually getting hypo levels, less than 4 mmol/l even when I was eating more carbs. I discussed all this with my Endo and he suggested cutting out the Metformin in the evening. This did the trick and just left the morning Met which I still need. My Endo concluded that my Insulin production was higher in the early evening than in the morning.

His conclusions would appear to have been correct. :D

Thank you Cugila,
I'm thinking along the same lines although I appear to be the opposite of you and it's mornings I have the problem.
I can have a bowl of museli and nuts for breakfast that can put me up from a fasting of about 5 to over 7 in an hour or two, then by the three hour or so mark I am struggling to stay above 4 especially if I am working.
In view of your comments I will have a word with my nurse when I get the chance and see what she suggests as I will soon be eating more sandwiches a day than before I was diagnosed!!
Thank you for your help, this forum is a treasure trove of wisedom, keep up the good work.
Regards
Angie
