I came across this board the other day and find it interesting to read about diabetes in the UK. I've been a Type 2 for 30 years and eat a very low carb diet and take 2 grams of extended release metformin each day. For exercise I walk most days and do some high intensity body weight exercise one day a week. My most recent A1c was 5.7. I'm about 15 lbs. heavier than I would like to be.

Welcome dlmoak! (I was going to say "Howdy" for a minute, but thought it might be crass).

Good to have another low-carber on board! Which part of the US do you come from? How many carbs are you eating to get that great HbA1c?

Hi dlmoak and welcome to the forum :) I see your HbA1c is very good. Ask as many questions as you like as ideas may vary between the US and the UK. BTW you need to multiply UK readings by 18 to get US readings.

Thanks, I am from Jackson, MS. Unfortunately, my state has one of the worst records for obesity and diabetes in the country. Traditionally, the diet in the South is mainly starches of one kind or the other. My Dad grew up on a farm in the depression and ate potatoes, rice, corn, peas, and lima beans and little in the way of veggies except for tomatoes and what we call turnip greens. so I grew up eating the same. My Mom was a baker and we had homemade desserts virtually every day when I was growing up. So I'm afraid I didn't give my genes much of a fighting chance. My wife and I lived in New Orleans for 30 years and moved back home in 2004.

My wife and I visited England, Scotland and Wales 20 years ago. We loved it, but have never managed to get back. Generally, I eat around 30g. of carbs a day. My wife, who is not a diabetic, eats the same way I do, which makes things much easier than they would be otherwise.
