Good Morning All,

Recently started a new account here, after taking a long break and losing access to an old account, though I have still continued to refer to Diabetes UK forums since being diagnosed with 'possible' Type 1 diabetes in 2012, as they have been a great source of useful information to me. I especially find the low carb forum 'what have you eaten today' thread so helpful, as in the early days I felt my best approach to getting off insulin and meds was to go low carb. It's never been confirmed which 'type' of diabetes I have, which doesn't bother me too much since my dietary approach would be the same. My blood sugars are monitored and I've kept up a low carb generally since then, but have to admit to lapsing and weight creeping back on a couple of times. Most recently was 2017/2018, where I somehow seemed to leap up an extra 2.5 stone. This was coupled with some emotional troubles I also experienced. Having tried to return to my norm, this time has been exceptionally difficult, since I took up more exercise and went strict low carb, yes, the weight went fairly quickly, but I then developed troubled dreams and difficulty sleeping. I then had another relapse in fibromyalgia and chronic pain and am now really struggling with digestive health and BG numbers are either persistently elevated at 6-7, or low, in the 4's.

Anyway, in attempt to make this story not so long, I'll say that I am now very intrigued about the Carnivore diet (and sorry, but because this is an introduction and enquiry, I was not sure exactly which thread to post). I mention this because I noticed @Brunneria follows Carnivore and whose posts I have followed for a while because I can relate to a lot of what works for her. It is only very recently that I considered more of a meat based eating plan (due to a lot of other people I know praising more vegan living over the years). My main stance being to help rein my blood sugar control back in to consistency, and also to heal gut issues, as well as aforementioned vicious circle.

I've done a fair bit of research on the Carnivore diet, but would love to hear anyone else's views or experience of it, and indeed any useful links I might have missed.

My main thoughts are, is the extra protein bad for wearing out insulin capacity or kidney function?
Can one still have coconut and olive oil? What about goat's milk kefir? Are any other supplements required?
Where to start!

Thank you for reading thus far, I look forward to being part of this great community again, especially while considering a new approach and sharing with others like minded.

Hi and welcome (again) :D

To re-activate your old account, just drop an email to [email protected] and you will get help to get it up and running again. That way all you old posts will be still with you, and you can just use one account (we should only have one account per member).

As for managing by diet, well done. It is a long old slog, isn’t it? But worth it. :)

Have you encountered the zerocarbzen.com website? I think that was the first one I read.
But there are a lot more, including lots of blogs and facebook groups.
Paleomedicina are the ones who taught me most about gut permeability (facebook group).

But really, the best thing about carnivore is that it is blindingly, essentially, utterly simple.
You get the hardcore ones who just eat steak and drink water.
Or the ones (like me) who include any animal product, including dairy and the odd smidge of veg or square of dark choc, or...
Some eat organ meats, others don’t.
Some eat keto fat to protein ratios. Some don’t.
Some do intermittent fasting. Some don’t.
Whatever works! :D

Just don’t let anyone start pontificating about how your aren’t doing it properly because you aren’t doing wot they do. Haha!

I have found that folic acid helps with my insomnia. I only take a couple of tablets a week rather than the preparing for pregnancy dose, but it makes a huge difference not only to feeling sleepy at the right time, but much better sleep without troubling thoughts and dreams.

Hi there @Brunneria and thanks for your swift reply. Sure , I'll reactivate, as I didn't know how I could do this.

I don't believe I've found that website yet, so I'm just about to check it now...

Yes, the simplicity really appeals to me too, I was afraid of eating too much protein before, so it will be good to introduce more. I feel I'll know more where I'm at with meat and fish, since I never really know which veg is irritating me. I do feel avocados may be still good for me,at least for now anyway. Do you still have coconut oil, or olive oil?

Yes, I too had some unwanted comments - I can empathise with the MIL and "you haven't eaten much....don't you eat gravy ?" lines etc, and due to leaving some veg at carvery.

This is all very helpful, I appreciate it a lot and will return with old account up, thank you!
