Hi, I'm Jimmy,

I was diagnosed last week. It wasn't a huge shock as I'm rather overweight. My fiancée is also fairly newly diagnosed diabetic and it was she who asked me to see the doctor after I done a dip test for glucose which was off the scale. I am at the moment in no mans land regarding my condition, I was prescribed metformin which the Dr said would help lower my blood sugar and also help me lose weight although I can't see how, since I have been on the medication I have felt really hungry and have struggled not to eat lots of **** (halloween was hardest as the children collected a mammoth amount of sweets) I have been told to alter my diet and give up smoking which I will endeavour to do but whilst changing my diet wont be too difficult, I'm quite scared about giving up smoking.

I just dont know at this time what I should be eating and what I should be avoiding, I've heard a lot of conflicting advice regarding different type of carbs different types of sugar, I'm all over the place, hopefuly I will find the answers here once I have a had a proper read on here.

Welcome Jimmy,

With regards to food, please read the following which you will find as a 'sticky' at the top of Greetings and Introductions section of the forum.

Hi Jimmy and welcome to the forum.

If I were you I wouldnt worry too much about giving up smoking right now, deal with one thing at a time and concentrate your efforts on reducing your blood glucose levels, once they are under control then yes, it would be a good idea to try to stop smoking. But if you try to do too much too soon you may find it will all be just too much for you and you will not achieve either good control or stopping smoking.

One step at a time :D

And another shout for the link that Nigel suggested, a very good place to start :D

Hi, Thanks for the replies, I think I will get myself a tester and do a little food diary for a few weeks and work out what's best for me, I think once I get into a routine things will be a lot clearer. To be honest I'm devastated at the moment as change is being forced upon me but at the same tame I realise that in the long run it can only benefit me and my family. I have some glucose dip sticks, would the results of the dips be a good temporary indication of how I'm getting on until I get a tester ?

As for smoking, giving up at a later date seems more viable and less shocking to me, for now cutting down is probably the best idea.

Hi and welcome to the forum

when the time comes to have a go at giving up smoking, don't let the doctor just fob you off with saying you must give up. Ask for their help as they can give you the patches etc on prescription or refer you to a no smoking clinic.

Getting the tester and the food diary is the best thing that you can do right now to help yourself understand your body.
