Hello

Just been diagnosed with type 2 and have been prescribed Metaformin.
I am considering getting hold of a self test device/strips would like to know what others recommend?
Also I am looking into cinnamon tea, anybody else out there trying it out, would love to hear from you

Just about everyone on here would agree that you should get a meter but opinions might differ as to which one. The cheapest to run is the SD Codefree but having done some tests on it I know it reads a little high. If you can "aim off" to cater for this then it's fine.

I know nothing about cinnamon tea.

ive read a little about the wonders of cinamon, dunno if its true but it tastes great so what the hell
 
Hi and welcome Anni, like you I'm newly diagnosed and also on Metformin.

It took me a few weeks to realise that a meter is essential, especially as my GP told me I didn't need to test. I'm in my first week of testing and can't quite believe how different foods affect my blood glucose levels.

If you have an iPhone or iPad I can thoroughly recommend the Sanofi Aventis iBGStar meter, it plugs directly into your device so you have all of your data with you, and it's really easy to use. They cost £12 from Boots and the test strips are £19.95 for 50.

You can get free meters online, but be aware that most manufacturers will want to give them to type 1 diabetics who test more frequently and will use more test strips. So if you fill out an online form and accidentally imply that you are Type 1, don't worry too much as they don't check ;)

There is a lot of really good advice on the forum and most people will tell you to eat to your meter.

Thanks for all your replies, Ive browsed the site and you are a wonderfully supportive bunch. Sadly I found advice at my medical centre consisted of you are a type 2 (6.9) Go and lose weight and exercise and we will test you again in 3 months time. Will be getting a meter now and have started on the exercise bike for 30mins a day and am getting to grips with portion sizes and sugars and carbs. As far as Im concerned diabetes is a bit of an elephant in the room, but Im gonna make sure its gonna be a small elephant. Best wishes to you all and I will be checking in regularly to see what you are all up to:)
