Hi all.I been type 1 for 7 years with good control & managing on Novomix 30 2 times a day.
Recently had my annual health check at Southmead hospital in Bristol & my doctor thinks it would be better for myself to move onto the basil bolus insulin.
Levimir & novo rapid when I eat.i am quiet happy to do this but am unsure about snacking between meals & just say if I decide to go out on an evening for a sociable few beers what actions do I take.3 pints of ale = about 60g of carbohydrate.A banana between meals =about 20g go carbs.
Advice appreciated
Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon, sorry you have not received a reply yet. I must admit I did not see your post for some reason.
Regarding Basal Bolus, I think it is the best way to manage, although others may disagree (you already know about your current regime, there is also the possibility of using the insulin pump etc).
What is certain is that you need some education about management. I have strong views on how diabetes should be managed, but I will try to leave my personal biases aside and give you a couple of different approaches. What I would suggest is that you research both of these, so you can make your own mind up when you have the facts.

1. Speak with your healthcare team about getting onto a DAFNE course. This stands for Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating. I think the courses are generally pretty oversubscribed, but if you keep enquiring then your doctors should arrange for you to go on one. The course looks at injecting to cover food, and also what to do in unusual circumstances, such as when you are ill.

2. Look into LCHF eating. This stands for Low Carbohydrate High Fat. It sounds counterintuitive, and raises questions about hypos. However, a growing number of diabetics are adopting this way of eating. Go to YouTube and search for Dr Troy Stapleton. He is a type 1 diabetic who eats in this manner, and he has given talks on the specifics of it.

I would strongly suggest researching both of these options, and seeing which works best for you. And remember to test your blood sugars regularly, particularly in the early days of a regime change.
