Hiya
So 3 months ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes with a hba1c number of 96 (awful & Scary eh!?) anyway I was on metformin twice a day and have tried really hard to eat healthily and exercise daily, I have lost weight about a stone down to 10st 12 trying to loose some more, had my 3 month blood test this Monday and go the results they are down to 46!!! So happy, that is a good number isn't it?? Please tell me it is? Can I reduce anymore than that?? Got an appointment with the diabetes nurse next Friday see what she says.

Congratulations on getting your HbA1c down to 46 which is in the pre-diabetic range (42-48) Well done on the weight loss too. If you keep eating lower carb and exercising you may indeed comedown further. As HbA1c covers blood glucose levels over a 3 month period it would be good for you to see what a further HbA1c shows in 3 months time. Well done on what you have achieved so far

Well done on the reductions in HbA1c and weight in just 3 months @dan1jess2! :) Yes that is a good number. And if you have reduced your figure from 96 to 46 in 12 weeks you should be able to reduce it further. Just carry on doing what you are doing, and get to 42 or below, in the non-diabetic range.

You could reduce your carb/sugar intake. That would get it even lower. If you decide to cut it down as low as keto I would make sure your taking regular glucose readings at home and it it gets too low talk to your doctor about either upping your carbs or lowering your medication. The latter being the better option of course. Being medication free while having great glucose levels is what I think we all want.
Good luck in getting them even lower, but be very proud of what you have achieved so far x
 
Thank you for all your lovely comments, I was really pleased with my latest results, must keep it up. I do still eat some carbs probably more than others so I will try and cut down see if I can lower it even more. Any tips would be great as I do feel hungry if I don't eat carbs? I eat them still but I measure them so I am not overeating. Xx

That's a great reduction. But with your success and motivation you could go from pre-diabetic levels to non diabetic levels.

Could you give us an idea of your typical carb intake? What you might eat in a normal day?

My typical day is shredded wheat bitsize for breakfast (I have found this is the only cereal where my levels go spike above 8) I can't eat eggs in the morning my tummy really doesn't like it. I have to eat a snack in between breakfast and lunch or my levels dip below 4 and I don't feel right usually a yoghurt or portion of fruit, Lunch is usually a sandwich or roll (brown) with ham/cheese or chicken salad, sometimes I only have a salad instead no bread, again in between lunch and dinner I have a snack or I dip as I am quite active at this time, so I have some more fruit or a cracker and peanut butter, dinner usually is rice/pasta or small jacket measured portion) with veg and fish or chicken. Sometimes have a snack before bed like a couple of crackers and peanut butter? I have a Fitbit now and do an average of 12,000 steps aday.

Ps I've never been told how many carbs I should be eating my nurse just says eat a healthy well balanced diet that's it...

I was diagnosed 9 years ago and never told to cut carbs. I have been recently and reduced my tablets from 9 various each day to 4 or 5. I have full fat Greek yoghurt and berries for breakfast, salad for lunch and cut potatoes etc from dinner during the week. I eat a bit more at weekends so take an extra metformin then. It seems to work for me. Also got a fit bit and do at least 10,000 steps normally more. You're doing really well, keep up the good work!

Hi Ceri,

If you did want to cut down on carbs you could make a great start by switching from shredded wheat to a low carb yoghurt spiced up with blueberries and swap peanut butter for a soft cheese.
I rarely eat sandwiches now as I have found something I love with the salads that Subway do but you can make your own.
Subways are only around 7-9g of carbs depending on which you choose.

How does that sound to you?

How many carbs is different for everyone.
I was told low GI and low sugar when I became diabetic. When I got my glucose meter I found out that even a small amount of low GI rice sent me hyperglicemic, That's when I decided to cut down dramatically.
I eat no carb based foods white or brown. Have no potatoes and limit other root veg, no fruit, and keep under 15g of carbs in other meals. (Started off at 7g to lower it at first)
I'm not suggesting you go as dramatic as I have, because your body may deal with carbs differently to mine.
So my advice is to check your blood before you eat and again 2 hours after. You'll know which foods give you a spike then, and avoid or limit them.
