Hi All,

I am new Type 2,age 70 and feeling very well, no medial problems at all. [can’t believe I have diabetes as no obvious symptoms]. I have been avidly reading your advice and the Low Carb forum. On Friday I received my Blood meter that was a giggle making the lancet work; by 5 15 pm and my 1st stab at it; BG was 6.4 mmol/L.

Saturday; Fasting BG 7.6. then ate 2 boiled eggs and 2 small toasts after 1 hour BG 12.2 after 2 BG 9.2 At 3 30 BG 5.8

I improved on this a bit.
on Sunday..

Fasting @ 9am BG 7.3 1 egg and 2 small toasts
I post BG 14.6 so the bread I think from what I've learnt.
2 post BG 12 00.

Pre lunch @ 2 pm BG 6.5 cheese and toms Post @3 30pm BG 6.9
Pre Snack @ 5pm BG 6.4 post @6 30 BG 9.7 ate small porridge so the carbs.
Pre dinner @7 45 BG 9.2 ate salmon and salad
@ 9.30 BG 6.3; To Bed @10 45pm BG 6.5

Monday Fasting @ 7.20am BG 7.0 had 15 min walk
pre breakfast @8 15 BG 8.3; 1st post 8.9; 2nd post BG 7.3
pre lunch BG 7.00 1hr post BG7.1; 2 post BG 6.2 small cheese and toms

Forgot to do pre dinner of salmon and salad 2hr post BG 6.3
To bed @ 12pm BG 6.00

Tues @ Fasting @ 7 10am BG 5.8
the pattern stayed similar thro day breakfast high was 7.3 getting lower thru day, even after pork chop and green veggies, I was BG 5.3 @ 8 30;

Then I ruined it by having a cappochino @ 8 30pm and to Bed was BG 6,8.

Wed @ Fasting 8.10am BG 6.6 ate very small greek yoghurt with 5 berries
At 9am did 60 minutes stuctured exercise

@ 10 35 BG 7.2

pre lunch @12 45pm BG 6.7 2eggs and spinach scrambled
1st post BG 6.8
2nd post @ 3.30 BG 7.6 and at 4 30pm BG 6.7

Sorry if this to much, what I would really like advice on is;--

Do I eat before my 9am exercise.?

Do I eat more little snacks between meals; would nuts do? half a banana? , to sweet?

Am I aiming for less Spikes of BG thru the day ?

Or less difference between pre meal readings and post meal readings?

Would a 10 minute walk after dinner lower or raise my bedtime reading ?

What am I aiming for.

Sorry this is so long, but very keen to lower every thing BG and weight.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Regards Flossie

Hi flossie,I'm relatively new to diabetes too, but from what I have learnt so far....

Good to aim for no more than increase of 2 points before and after eating, and avoiding spikes altogether if possible!

I read a few posts which suggested eat as soon as you wake/get up, as that will stop any dumping your liver does (overnight as bs goes down lower, liver can compensate by releasing more, sending bs up....eating I think stops it (or something like that!)

Exercise will tend to bring bs down

Poor fasting bs readings, those taken first thing, may be hardest to get down and even with low carbing can take a little while

I find small snacks are great as stop me getting hungry....maybe go easy on the bananas. I eat just a few nuts, or baby bels, or vegetable sticks. Gherkints, olives, capers etc!

There's some low carb bread called Livlife that is around 3 g per slice that helps me too.

All the very best, I'm sure others will offer great advice.

Hi Flossie and welcome to the club. I'm 67 and also feel really well, and completely unmedicated. Diabetes was a shock when diagnosed just over 12 months ago. You are being very positive and pro-active and I take my hat off to you. Keep this up and you will beat this disease! :)

To answer your questions.

It is best to eat as soon as possible after you get up or your liver may dump glucose in your bloodstream in the belief you need extra energy with having fasted overnight. Also, exercise is better after meals as it may help bring your levels down. More strenuous exercise may raise levels initially.

Ideally it is better not to snack at all and to eat 3 evenly spaced meals, but we don't all manage this. Not snacking helps your levels drop nicely before your next meal. If you snack, it should be no carb food like cheese ideally otherwise any carbs will raise your levels, which may not come back down before your next meal is due. Most people on here snack on a few nuts or cheese.

The difference between your before meal and post meal (2hr) reading should be less than 2mmol/l, ideally under 1.5mmol/l

Most people say a short walk, even up and down the stairs for 10 minutes, lowers levels if you do it about 45 minutes to an hour after starting your last meal.

You need to set your own targets, and when you reach them, lower them again. The NICE guidelines are over-generous (under 7 fasting and pre-meal, under 8.5 at 2hrs after, but are OK for newly diagnosed still finding their feet)

These are my targets:
Fasting under 5.5
1hr after meals under 7.8, ideally less most of the time
2hrs after meals under 6.6
before lunch under 6
before tea under 5.5
bedtime under 5.5

regarding the cappuccino, try coffee with double cream instead of milk. Milk has a lot of sugar in it. Cream has none.

Dear All,

Apologizes for not replying sooner, to thank you all for the most helpful advice and support.

I am still logging on every day to follow the threads, its a upward learning curve, I'am almost a nerd. LOL
Steak tonight with Stilton on mushrooms and veg with butter. Yummie

I am on a Juggle course which is interesting but as you all say the HCP are restricted by the NHS.
One young women has T2 brought on by pregnancy and is far to plump; I am having to resist saying come to this site.

Should I pass the word. I have lost weight easily and still eat well. But then I haven't 3 kiddies.
Criminal I'd call it, if I hadn't changed Doctors and been confirmed a T2, I would still be thinking I was OK.

But now I have found this site I have taken control of my body and stopped thinking I'am indestructible.

Well thanks again. I'am going to watch Prof Ken Sikaris lecture again, fascinating almost feel I understand it.

Regards Flossie

Very good Flossie, you'll be fine.

As for 'Passing the word', yes why not. Anything that might save more diabetics from the vagaries of the NHS.

Welcome & your already making progress in the control of the diabetes.
I feel a must for newcomers is to go to the X-pert health website & order Dr trudi deakins EAT FAT book, it's really helpful in guiding us on the path to controlling the diabetes.
Main thing is decreasing food that put glucose into the blood & increasing fats & protien, which the book gives good guidelines on what & how to.
