Hi David welcome to the forum. Until I came across this forum I thought that I was being good food wise by sticking to the diet that I was advised to eat by my DN! One of the most important things in your armoury is a BS meter which you've already got - one up on me it took me 2-3 years to get one because I was told I didn't need to test and I believed them! Next thing is when you read the nutritional information look for the TOTAL carbs not just the sugars - l used to look at the sugar, fat and calories and didn't bother with carb content - which, as it turns out, was the most important one! It's early days for you so don't run before you can walk - have a read of the forum - you'll be surprised what you can and cannot eat, test immediately before and 2 hours after eating and once you get to know what foods you can eat and those to avoid your BS should come down. Remember though that we are all individuals and what some of us can eat others cannot eg I can eat cereals such as bran flakes and porridge, seeded bread and some pasta whilst for others it's off the menu completely. It's a big learning curve but we're all here to help and support you.
