New to Diabetes uk

Hi everyone my name is Julie Birch and I have type two diabetes. I also have just found out I have renal cancer and go into hospital in January. I was just wondering if this will have any effect on my diabetes.
Hi @jujubirch63 & welcome to the forum

So sorry to hear of you health troubles, it must be worrying for you. I have no experience of what you are going through but illness & treatments can affect diabetes in different ways, it may be best to speak to your consultant or GP about what to expect.

Just a heads up so you are aware, this forum is Diabetes.Co.Uk. A different place to the charity Diabetes UK. But we are a friendly bunch and we have members who may be have experiences that they can share with you.

Wishing you well with your health

Hello @jujubirch63, welcome to the Forum, going to hospital can be OK for diet control of type 2 diabetes. The hospital will have a dietitian to help with ensuring you keep to a suitable diabetic diet. Let the nurse know you need to chat with them when you are admitted, and they will do their best to keep your meals low carb. If you tell them you are diabetic they will take finger prick tests every morning, so that you can keep track in your diary. Also when I go in I usually take some low carb snacks, just in case.

Hello @jujubirch63 and welcome to the forum.

I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I’m not sure which aspect you would like help on.

Is it whether the cancer will affect your diabetes, whether the treatment for the cancer will affect your diabetes, or whether the stay in hospital will affect your diabetes. Or indeed all three?

Are you willing to share what treatment is planned which might help our members give you better advice?

Do you normally control your diabetes with a low carb diet?

Sorry for bombarding you will so many questions on your first post.

Regards,

So sorry. I have kidney cancer in my right kidney. They are hoping to operate in the New Year. I am worried if the cancer will have any effect on my type two diabetes, also my husband has to do cooking for six weeks after and all he wants to do is nothing or takeaways. He will not do normal cooking. I have not got the energy to batch cook as I am always hungry and very very tired. Thank you all for your kind words.

Hi @jujubirch63 and welcome to the forums.

Your profile says you are diet controlled so I assume you are low carbing??

Do you have any friends or family who could encourage your husband to realise that you will need post op support?

Otherwise how low carb is your current diet? You may be able to buy pre-cooked meals that aren't too bad carb wise???

Hopefully your husband will at least shop for you?

eg yoghurt and (heated) frozen berries for breakfast
low carb soups for lunch

Woud your husband boil eggs for you?

Good luck for your op.
