Hi Everyone

I have been lurking around for the past week or so and have finally decided to come and join in!! Apologies in advance for the long post! :)

I've had Type 2 Diabetes since I was 28 and am now 35 but the diabetes all of a sudden has gotten worse. It runs in my family on both sides so I suppose I was bound to get it at some point in my life, just dodn't expect it so soon!

I've been taking Metformin and they did switch me to the Metformin SR as I had such an upset tummy. I'm now taking 4 x 500 a day and pioglitazone 15 mg per day and my HBA1C is 7.7, it has come down from 8.4 3 mths ago but I feel awful all the time. I'm constantly drinking, getting up for bathroom visits and am so tired all the time that I just want to sleep. My Sugars before eating range between 8-12 and after can be between 10 and 14. Last week I had a cold and for the first time I had blood sugars of 19 and felt rotten but after a few days they did come back down to around 12. Also the metofrmin has just started upsetting my tummy again so I've had to reduce the dose to 2 tablets at the mo. :(

I am overweight and am trying to lose weight and I have lost 5 stone but I still need to lose more but it is coming off very slowly. I eat a Low GI diet but I also have a gluten intolerance so that doesn't help matters either!

I'm due to see my GP later this evening to discuss my latest HBA1C results and I'm not quite sure what she is going to suggest as I feel that I am getting to the end of the line as it were!!

I've read some posts on this forum and I am envious I suppose of the blood sugar readings some people have such as 5.5 before eating and 9 after eating, I have never had readings like that at all and wish I could.

I exercise 4-5 times a week for 45 mins and I suppose I can try and fit more in but I am so tired that I just don't want to go out and exercise.

Sorry for it appearing to be as though I am moaning and thanks for listening, I guess I am just so fed up with feeling rotten all the time and not sure how to go about making myself feel better!

Hi

I tend to have sml bowl of porridge and berries for b'fast or 1 slice of seeded GF Bread and scrambled egg, lunch is sometimes a roll with salad + ham/cheese, sometimes soup or a salad followed by some tinned fruit in natural juice cos I'm not a great fruit lover and dinner is fish, veggies and 2 little potatoes, maybe 1 sausage, baked beans and a spoonful of rice, spag bol and I only have 2 tbsp of cooked pasta with the sauce, maybe a coulpe of slices of a roast joint, vegetables and 1 roast potato. Sometimes I have sugar free angel delight after dinner or custard with half a sliced banana in as I confess to having a sweet tooth!

I only ever use skimmed milk and occasionaly might munch a couple of biscuits or a couple of squares of dark chocolate.

Am I eating the wrong things?
Am confused as the last time I saw the diabetic dietician she said my food was okay, could do with eating more fruit and veg but she knows I have struggled from not eating any to trying to eat 5 a day!

Well, I am newly diagnosed, but I had found that putting fewer carbs in my body (egg & bacon for breakkie, salad with meat/fish at lunch and meat/fish with vegetables for dinner - along with some cheese and nuts for snacks), my sugar levels are better. :)

Have you read on here about the low carb situation? People's tests are better, including cholesterol, etc. :D

Definitely try a lower carb diet. Needn't be NO carb, just lower. You say you use skim milk. You don't need to avoid all fats on a lower carb diet. Losing 5 stone is just brilliant! It's taken me 15 months to lose just under3 and I need to lose more.
How much exercise do you do? It's an essential part of the process of BG control. You need to do about 45 mins aerobic exercise every other day. Aerobic just means be a bit breathless and your heart rate up. How much depends on your age. Walking briskly is enough, or swimming, or aquafit exercise classes. If you hate the idea of the gym, you don't need to do that, although it can be very helpful to get some guidance from a coach.

I exercise 4-5 times a week for around 45 mins, Mon+Wed evenings is Aqua Aerobics, Thursday evening is Gym, Friday evening is Swimming and at the weekends I have a break!! Sometimes I go for a nice swim or a walk at the weekend.

Have seen my GP and she has increased my pioglitazone to 30mg and is referring me to the diabetes team at our local hospital for them to deal with me! As I'm still relatively young they are concerend that I have high levels and more time for complications to set in - does that sound right! She has mentioned that I may have to start insulin but the diabetic team would discuss that would me.

Would like to thank you all for your ideas and I will certianly try the low carb diet option although maybe not as low as some of you guys, I have only 1 kidney and have been warned about excess protein intake.

Hi Fiona, I think you should probably not increase your protein intake too much, esp if you have to keep an eye on your kidney. Increase the amount of vegetables and reduce the carbs a bit further instead, see if that makes any difference.

Also did your doctor to a c peptide test, you wouldnt be the first one to be misdiagnosed, you could have LADA for example, please go back and ask.

All the best

Karen
