Hi I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could answer some questions that I have? A year ago I scored 6.3 in the fasting glucose test which put me in the pre diabetes category. I was advised to lose weight and get retested in 6 months - this time my level was 6.0 - I think that is the start of the pre diabetes scale - this was December 2913. However, since then I have had a number of funny episodes where I felt I was going to conk out and the colour has drained from my face - then my heart started beating really fast and I felt really thirsty. I bought a blood glucose monitor last week to keep an eye on things and noticed that my blood sugar levels have gone up to 8.2 - in fact when I had one of theses funny episodes the reading was 8.0. What I have also noticed is that when I wake in the morning I can have a blood glucose level of 5.4 at 5.00 am when still in bed - then go downstairs at 7.00 am without having a shower or eating and have a blood glucose level of 6.2.
Also does anyone know if your blood glucose levels are raise if you are unwell?
There are quite a few questions there and I would welcome any advice on these matters.

Thanks,

MGM

Are the readings of 8 following food or fasting? If its within 2 hours of eating then its fine. Being ill can raise your levels too. I am sure one of the more experienced diabetics will be along to offer more advice soon ( I am still in the early days and learning lol)
Hope you feel better and get sorted soon, and welcome to the forum :)

Hi MGM

With that 8.0 reading you are edging towards diabetes, depending on the circumstances of the test. It's great that you have a meter, and are using it, and came on here for advice. I imagine you want to avoid progressing on to diabetes and needing medication. That means you will need to make changes to your exercise and diet, probably. There is plenty of information on here for healthy diets and exercise patterns, and there is definitely more than one approach that works for different people.

From what you say if you are diabetic it is only marginal as the readings are near normal and not too low either. Yes, illness does cause blood sugar to rise. Your symptoms aren't typical of diabetes so if they continue I suggest a chat with the GP to check pressure etc. If you do check your blood sugar take the reading 2 hours after a typical meal and it should be below 8'ish

Thanks shellysexbomb, Spiker and Daibell - Apologies for not replying sooner but I have only just realised that you had replied - I thought that I would receive an email to notify me but did not. I got this reading of 8.0 after eating 1 jelly baby - previously the reading was 5.9. I saw my G.P. And have arranged a fasting blood glucose test for Tuesday. I have only recently found out that I have very little stomach acid and that I am low in vitamin B12, magnesium and other nutrients as my stomach has not been able to absorb the nutrients from my food. Does anyone else relate to these nutritional deficiencies or have any information on their effect on insulin resistance. I have read that a deficiency in magnesium and a deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to insulin resistance. I am losing weight by cutting out biscuits, sweets and cakes but I also think that I need to do some walking as exercise. If anyone can enlighten me further it would be much appreciated. I have now started measuring my blood glucose when I get up in the morning and also 1 hour and then 2 hours after eating.

Thanks

MGM
