New to insulin pen

Hi everyone,
I am asking this on behalf of my mother who as of yesterday has started to use an insulin pen. Her blood sugar levels have been pretty static at around 10-12 and today they are up at 23.
She is petrified and can't get hold of any medical professionals to ask if this normal. Please help.

I'm not an insulin user myself, but that rise certainly doesn't sound right. What medication was she on before the insulin pen?

Before having the insulin, do an airshot to test the needle. 2 units shoud be enough.

Her levels have decreased down to 16 so I hope this is an indication of things to come. Previously she has been on Byetta for a short time as it caused chronic nausea and did nothing to lower the levels. She seems calmer and I would like to thank the two people who bothered to reply.

Hi John, If she has just started to take a long acting insulin then it can take up to three days to work to its maximum effect. Just keep writing those BG results down then the nurse may alter the dose on your mums next appointment untill it is right. They usually start you on a lower dose and then increase dosage to avoid possible hypos. A high BG for a short while wont do much harm, so dont panic , I'm sure it will settle soon.
