I want to start on a low Carb diet but i don't really know where to start. Is there a good book on it?

Also I have a bowel problem, Hirschsprung's, and need to keep my fibre up. I tend to have porridge a few days a week with honey and raisins. Can i still have this. I notice some people write about brown rice, can you have that?

I am on statins, Gliclazide & Metformin. Should i talk to my diabetic nurse first about checking my levels and reducing the tablets accordingly?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Gerry

I'm T2 on metformin SR 500x2 + no working thyroid + probable cardiomyopathy/ atrial fibrillation + I take simvastatin......
That said I am quite happily low carbing. I have on average 70g a day but some on here have more. I need to lose weight so I have the smaller amount.
I suffered from -dare I say it-constipation and thought it was the lower carbing but it was being exacerbated by the lack of thyroid. Since taking levothyroxine I can tell I have speeded up slightly but I still eat things like flax seed/ oatbran (max 2tbsps a day)/ etc
I eat very little fruit because it raises my BS too much at the moment.
Neither can I eat vast amounts of green veg because of the warfarin I take but I find that after a few days of lower carbing I lost the 'I always feel hungry syndrome.'
Before you lower carb read some of the information on this forum and others.
If you decide to go ahead I can recommend 2 books that I use all the time.
The 2011 Carb/Calorie bible-definitely cannot carry this one around.
The Pocket Collins Little Gem Carb counter. I can carry this one around.
There is a wonderful low-carb recipe section on here if you like cooking.
I don't eat any rice, pasta, cereals etc
I sometimes eat the odd potato.
Good Luck if you do decide to start.
My sister shares my house and I cook the same food I have and bread, potatoes etc for her.
PS I still have a large glass of white wine about 5 days a week..

If you low carb on the meds you take, you should ensure you test regularly with your new diet for a while in case you need to reduce your medication. Also worth a chat with the doc first. You need to consider how much of a change your carb reduction will be. If you are on a large number of carbs now, perhaps you could try a more modest reduction first before going on to very low carb and see how that goes. I still have basmati rice once a week and wholewheat pasta once a week, I have low GI carbs on top, such as Burgen soya and linseed bread and it works well for me. You'll need to see how a reduced number of carbs work for you.

im new to low carb diet myself, i bought a book called Low Carb Dieting For Dummies. It is a very easy book to read and gives exellent information and covers everything you need to know about low carbing. good luck with your low carb diet x starlight :)
