Hi everyone

Im new to the forum and in fact Diabetes in general. For a year I have been trying to work with all my health professionals to help control my Diabetes. It has been a long and difficult process.

First ever appointment with Diabetic consultants and Plasma Glucose and HBA1c were done - plasma glucose was 20.7mmol/L and HbA1c 122mmol/mol
in August 2014 (BG was 16.7 and keytones 0.2mmol/L).

I have been on metformin, gliclazide, sitagliptin etc for nearly a year and nothing improved the high blood sugars (even tried specialist diets from Diabetes uk to reduce carbs and sugars no joy)

I have just been asked to stop gliclazide and I am now taking Humulin I morning and pm of 10 units and I am now using novorapid insulin at meal times. This is how it has gone - can anyone help me work out if im doing anything wrong ?

Date Humulin I AM test BG Humulin I PM
7/7/15 10 units 14.2 19.1 11.6 7.4 8.3 17.4 10 units

7/715 Novorapid in units 4 2 0 0

8/7/15 Humulin I 15.4 10.8 14.4 13.5 Humulin I
10 units AM 10 units PM

8/7/15 Novorapid in units 2 8 8 2

9/7/15 Humulin I 14.9 13.9 14.7 14.6 Humulin I
10 units AM 10 units PM

9/7/15 Novorapid in units 7 2 7 3

10/7/15 Humulin I 12.5 15.7 13.5 16.5 Humulin I
10 units AM 10 units PM

10/7/15 Novorapid in units 8 3 13 3

I think Im taking a lot of insulin and I am worried that it is not working - I also thought the fast acting Novorapid would have made me reduce BG numbers very quickly but that doesnt seem to be the case for me - has anyone else experienced this

Thanks everyone grateful for any replies

I would say chat to your nurse. From my experience it's the long acting that needs tweaking when sugars are in a pattern of high. For example it's like driving a car but the engine doesn't have enough yes it can be topped up with petrol but really until the engine gets fixed the energy will always be limited. I hope that makes sense. Don't worry about the amount taken its just what your body needs do you split your long acting just out of interest?

Hi. Can you let us know your BMI/weight. Excess weight can cause a vicious circle with insulin due to insulin resistance. Have you balanced the humulin? Are you testing 2-3 hours after a meal to check you have the Bolus ratio right? Your readings aren't very clear to me? Can you let us know your typical morning fasting blood sugar level; it should be somewhere between 5 -7 mmol where possible.

Thanks Fafefaye and Diabell

I have been instructed to take HumulinI 10 units AM and PM - weight 96kg
My typical first bloods are usually 13 or higher - I am trying to get my BG levels between six and ten but I dont seem to be able to

eg typical day

10/7/2015 10 units of Humulin I (about 7am)

first bg test = 12.5 breakfast and carb calculation meant i needed 8 units of novorapid
lunchtime bg test 15.7 (key tones 0.2) lunch carb calc meant i needed 3 units of novorapid
teatime bg test 13.5 teatime carb calc meant i needed 13 units of novorapid
bedtime bg test 16.5 (lo key tones) nothing to eat but 3 units of novorapid
bedtime 10 units of Humulin I

JoJo - What are you doing with your diet at the moment? Have you stuck with reduced carbohydrate, or are you eating "normally" at the moment? And, do you carry any extra poundage? Carrying a bit of weight around the tummy can have quite an impact on how the body deals with glucose, in my own experience.

And talking of diet and BS, adjusting my basal insulin and moving to a mostly raw veg and fruit diet has made a huge difference.

HI all

Yep Im using Carbs and Cals - im 96kg (5ft 7in height) - so yes overweight and trying to stick to a low carb diet

If it helps I did weight watchers and gym. I found the g I concept to diabetes worked well being mainly medium. I lost around 25kgs so good luck with it

Have you got instructions to increase your dosage every 3 days as this is the only way to bring your levels down...

Hi I am in Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)

I am going to be speaking to my diabetic nurse on Monday for more advice - as I cant understand why both insulins are achieving between 6-10 mmol

I am on holiday Thursday and flying to Spain for a well deserved rest - but also a bit worried about how the heat will affect me

I also wondered if stress could be affecting my numbers

any thoughts x
