Hi,

I am new to this forum and at present I think I am pre- diabetic. I posted the topic 'pre diabetic in need of advise', unofrtunately I have had no relies.

Can anyone tell me why, if I don't have 'proper' diabetes, why do I have readings of 7 - 9 if I eat a moderate carb meal and if I have something a bit naughtly like a mozzarella and ham salad with some garlic bread followed by a pancake and icecream I can have a reading of 11.2? Reading your posts this constitutes diabetes.

Also can anyone tell me why I cannot eat a large meal of chicken and veggies, no potatoes and not too many carrots I still have a reading of 7.2?

At present I am losing weight, I could play a tune on my ribs! I try to eat lots of cheese, eggs and nuts and full fat yoghurt to keep the weight on although I can't eat large portions of nuts or yoghurt without my BG reading over 7.0. At the moment I eat every 2 hours during the day if my BG is below 6.5, is this correct or am I able to eat more often to get the calories in?

Diabetes is a possibility, but we cannot diagnose. We are mostly not doctors. If you think you really have diabetes, get your GP to administer a Glucose tolerance testthat isthe only way that diabetes can be definitely confirmed. As you are probably aware, there's quite a spectrum of symptoms.
I personally would prefer to treat a "pre-diabetic" condition as diabetes. Many doctors tend to want to wait and see what develops. Whilst they do that, complications may be starting.
Go to your GP. It's his job. If he doesn't want to do it, ask for a second opinion. It's your right to ask, but not necessarily to get.

Thankyou for replying Hanadr, I have been to 3 different doctors and a diabetic nurse, non of them will give me a oral glucose test only a fasting test so I feel that I am constantly hitting a brick wall.

I will continue to try and keep my blood sugars below 6.5 but do not not know what to eat to stop losing any more weight or keep my energy up as I constantly feel tired.

Hi blue pippy,

It sounds as if you need to cut back on carbohydrates - cereals, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc to help with your condition.

After meal readings of less than 8 are OK but double figures aren't good for anyone.

Best Wishes - John

Hi Blue Pippy,

why have you not been offered an HBA1C blood test? This would give a clear indication.

Steve.

Hi Blue Pippy, Can you tell us what your before meal and fasting (morning ) levels are? Also when are you taking these readings? One hour after a meal ,two hours or when? We really need that sort of info. to help you interpret your readings.

If you are trying to put on weight please do not cut back on anything at the moment!

Hi, thankyou for your replies!

My BG reading in the morning before breakfast is usually around 4.6 - 5.0 if I go to bed with a BG below 6.5. Its a bit higher if my BG is higher before I go to bed for example, I ate 6 oat crackers with full fat philadephia cheese at 10pm last night and had a reading of 8.9 2hrs later at midnight, this morning my fasting BG was 5.8. I was really disappointed as I only had 7.9 after eating an almond croisant and two chicken legs 2 when I first started testing and enjoyed that far more!

I have been testing 2hrs after I have eaten. I don't usually test after an hour. Since starting to test, I have drastically cut back on bread, rice, pasta. I do try to include a bit in an effort to up my calorie count but cannot manage more than 1 slice of w/meal bread or 1 tbsp of brown rice or noodles with a meal such as salmon and veggies without my BG going over 6.5.

If I have longer than 2hrs between meals/snacks my BG will return to about 4.8 -5.0 although I did have a small pizza and some icrecream when I first started testing that gave me a BG of 11.3 that was only down to 7.0 4hrs later.

I try to eat every 2hours from breakfast till bedtime (snacks such as a handful of nuts or 2 scoops of full fat yoghurt or a small apple between breakfast, lunch and dinner). This will sound silly but I am staying up late to get another snack in so I don't lose anymore weight, perhaps its this making thats me tired rather than the lack of calories?!

Can you eat more often than every 2 hrs?

At least, you now know that pizza and ice cream is bad.

Nuts are very high in calories and shouldn't do your blood glucose readings any harm. If you wish to put weight on then why not eat a few more nuts?
