Diagnosed in March 2016 but medication has not been regulated yet. When diagnosed I was 22.4. I am on 1000 Metformin in the morning and 1000 Metformin plus40mg Gliciazide with evening meal. I have had about 5 hypos so far so think the meds need changing. ANYWAY. This weekend, went down to a family event. Had a light breakfast and then nothing until I got to family at around 5pm. All I had was a small piece of salmon, 3 pieces of potato salad and a small piece of corn on the cob. I also had about 3/4 vodka and diet cokes BUT, I forgot to take my evening tablets. Long story short, I apparently fell over a couple of times and my husband and son had to virtually carry me to our accommodation. I don't remember any part of it but I do know I was definitely not drunk. I am extremely embarrassed as everyone, obviously though I was drunk out of my skull and I now have to face a lecture from my son on the virtues of drinking. PLEASE, is this something that happens

Yes, alcohol can be quite dangerous when you are taking drugs that affect insulin production (glic). It's quite possible you had a hypo, especially with such light food. The fact you didn't take your tablets at that particular time is probably a blessing in disguise as they might have made things worse. I could be wrong, but I don't think drugs work just by individual dose as they can build up in your system so would still have been affecting you at the time you were drinking. I think there are probably other posts around the forum about the effect of alcohol on BG if you search.

Do you have a meter to test your BS as it is an essential tool to have. I have to be careful as sometimes my blood sugar and my blood pressure drop and I collapse.

Hi, yes I have a BS meter and I keep getting very low readings. It was 3 at lunchtime before the party. I have had about 5 hypos during the day but they keep saying if you are on Metformin, you cannot have a hypo

Thanks Indy. I have read that if you have a drink, warn people you are diabetic but this was crazy. Alcohol has never affected me that bad. I can easily have 3 or 4 drinks and feel hardly any effect but this just hit me like a brick wall and I was so embarrased the next day when I found out. I will get back to the diabetic nurse. That was quite scary though. I have had a few hypos where I start to sweat, start to shake, feel sick and light headed but this just hit me. My brother in law came back from the party about an hour later and I got up and we chatted into the wee small hours and I was fine

You can definately hypo while taking Metformin, that is the reason I stopped taking it as just running inside to answer the phone would drop my BS instantly. Maybe a trip to your Dr to see if you can get your dose reduced.
