Hi all. I found out I had type one on 23 October and it came as a shock obviously. Anyway I am 39 and for the first few weeks my blood sugars were high and all over the place. I think I am averaging 7.4 at the moment and taking 3 units of novorapid with each meal and 5 lantus solostar at tea time. I have been told I am probably honeymooning and know friends who take 20-30 units of rapid with each meal. Am I right in thinking that I am only been told to take 3 units because I am still producing some insulin? Also how long have people's honeymoon period lasted, does it just slowly fade away and your insulin doses increase? And is it better to be completely insulin deficient so you can gauge units per grammes of carbs or should I make the most of being in this period. Looking to share experiences with others who are newbies or have lived with type 1 for a long time

Hello and welcome to the forum! I was diagnosed 24th Oct 2013 so have just passed my diabirthday, but still honeymooning. Personally I've found that my insulin needs have gone up and then back down again for periods - I presume I have a spluttering pancreas. Others I met on the DAFNE course had a more gradual increase, so clearly everyone is different. Test your BG levels often, and if patterns appear over time (too high or too low) then talk with your DSN to assess if you need to adjust your dosage levels.

Thanks artemisbow. I am watching them very closely. Very up and down and hard to find a pattern at the moment. I will preserve

It's very frustrating at first because often things don't follow a pattern when you are in honeymoon - you have a variable in the equation that you have no control or sight of. But you are making a good habit by testing regularly - when things do start to become a bit more regular you will be set up to spot any patterns that do emerge. Keep going, you're doing the right thing :)
