Not seen this anywhere else in these forums. A report in the New Scientist last week says that a team from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York are running a five year clinical trial to test for the effects on ageing, general health and cognition. As I read it, it would seem that metformin has been found to increase longevity in a range of animals. The report was a bit sparse on detail but seems as though the team think metformin may help ward off the general decline due to old age. Sorry no links as this was in the paper copy.

That's good news. My experience has been spoiled by several years of the worst case of the runs known to mankind. Not such an issue now, but even with the runs, it never helped me lose weight which is annoying. It's one of the reasons GPs seem to like prescribing it for diabetes.

I was also looking at some research which suggests it helps with cholesterol levels and even talks about metformin vs statins. If the manufacturer can show that it can be used for another purpose they can apply for another patent specifying a different use. This could lead to only the patent holder making the stuff and any other manufacturer requiring a license.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Yes I have read about this study.
The anti-aging benefits have been known for some time.
Good to combine it with vit d and circumin for added ampk activation.

Hard on the kidneys my only concern I believe there is a new metformin coming out that works only in the intestines bypassing organs but I have heard little about it.I don't think kidneys at 100 or 120 could handle metformin don't know.In any case I would probably be as fat as a house on insulin by now but for metformin.

well i hope my metformin dont prolong my life too long
its murder not being able to eat the food i want to ....eg morrisons fresh cream cakes and pies and pastys haha

I hope to get a long and wonderful life maybe on metformin, untill now no bad sideeffects, just worry about the risk of getting too low in vitamin B12 (a deficiency that also can cause neuropathy)

I think over time one get used to not eating the old kind of foods... and then 6-8 times a year I do take a day or a meal off and eat a Little of everything I like , like today when i was at a funeral and had the chance to eat the diseased´s favorite foods served at his selfplaned funeral, he died peacefully but very ill at 86 years old.
