Hi,

Stumbled across this forum completely by chance but after browsing it for an hour or so I think it will become very helpful to me.

So, long story short, I was diagnosed with diabetes 4 weeks ago and had to have a few more blood tests. Today I had an appointment to see my Dr who has put me on 500mg Metformin to build up to 3 times a day over the next 3 weeks. However, while at the moment my treatment is based on a T2 diagnosis, my Dr has referred me to my local diabetic clinic to speak with a specialist regarding the possibility of it being Mody (is that right?!) rather than T2 due to a prominent history of various types within both sides of my family. I am overweight which I know is a large factor in my diagnosis so have signed up to a weight loss programme & my Dr has referred me to a dietician for further advice.
Due to my family history of diabetes I have known it was likely to affect me directly, especially with my weight, but I didn't expect there to be a degree of uncertainty to the full diagnosis.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I'm worried about the possibility of it being Mody as I have 2 young children so they could be at risk as well.

Thanks,
Zoe-Louisa x

Hi there,

I have recently been diagnosed as having monogenic diabetes (MODY3), but things are a bit different as I had a diagnosis of type 1 for 29 years before this.

I'm not sure how they would go about identifying the type of diabetes in someone who is newly diagnosed, but there is info on the diabetes genes website...

http://www.diabetesgenes.org

Perhaps try phoning your regional specialist MODY diabetes nurse for some info, they should be able to talk you through the diagnostic process for your circumstances.

Hope this helps, and good luck in getting an accurate diagnosis!
