Newbie - foot problem

Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to give me advice/reassurance.
I am not (yet?) disgnosed - I have just had some blood tests and the surgery called and asked me to re-do them, mainly because the blood sugar was higher than expected. I am 43, overweight and my dad had type 2 and I sort of expect the inevitable. There are two main things on my mind:
1) I feel such a deep sense of guilt/shame that I have brought this on myself. I can't imagine "admitting" it to friends/family. Is this normal?
2) I am worried about my foot - I seem to have athletes foot on the instep and I have a deep crack/fissure that doesn't seem to be going away. I am using daktarin cream regularly and keeping the foot moisturised. There are so many 'scary' things on the internet about diabetics and feet - I'm not seeing the Dr for 2 weeks for test results and will obviously mention it then, will that be ok?

Maybe you could get an appointment with the nurse at your surgery, they generally deal with wounds, she will be able to see your test results and treat your foot appropriately.

Hi Beth and welcome!
I suspect that your surgery is repeating an HbA1c test (the test used to diagnose diabetes), two tests are taken to confirm the diagnosis.
However if you are diagnosed please don’t blame yourself, whatever your diet and lifestyle have been there are many people doing the exact same things and not got diabetes. It is a little difficult telling family and friends but if you need to chat and aren’t ready to talk to your nearest and dearest come and bend our ears, there’s always someone here who’ll listen.
I can’t advise about your foot, we aren’t allowed to diagnose however it might be wise to get your foot looked at before the appt in 2 weeks, but if it is diabetes related and you get your blood sugars under control, there is no reason to suspect it won’t clear up.
Here is a link to useful info we give to newly diagnosed:

If they come back with anything concerning the Dr should contact you with the results I hope. Mine rang me at work the next day. I was started on Metformin that day.

Try not to feel guilty. I have a family history and feel no guilt in having it! It's something you can blame on your genes. And there's things you can do to reverse it too.

I was most annoyed when I did bg on my husband, who's far more overweight than I am, and it was normal an hour after consuming a whole dominoes pizza. Its not fair!

I eat much healthier than he does and am far less overweight but I am predisposed to it. I am only 2 stone overweight and he's about 6!

In the meantime, if you feel ill or peculiar then contact the doctors again.

Thank you so much for the quick replies :) I hadn't thought about the fact the Dr would phone if there's major concerns, that reassures me. They are a really good surgery so I'm sure they would. I am away next week which is why the appt is the week after. It was only the non-fasting blood sugar test.

I don't feel ill - I get very tired but I'm a working single mum ... who isn't tired?!

I was monitored for gestational diabetes when pregnant (12 years ago). I never fully developed it and my tests were always in the right zone after meals. I was very careful with my diet. I'm really hoping I'll be able to do that again.

If you've done it before you can definitely do it again! You've got a good place to start.

Hopefully you're away for a nice reason!

Yes thank you :) Going away with my mum and son.

I just feel so cross with myself that I never managed to keep up changes enough to prevent it. But yes, I feel sure I'd do it again. And if I've jumped the gun and it's not a diagnosis or pre-diabetic, I will have to take the warning and make the changes anyway.
