Hi, This is my first post BTW, I'm glad to find this site theres so much Info I never knew and thats only after reading a few posts that i've never knew until now. I find it difficult though due to my dyslexia, About me, I'm a young at heart 40 year old, on statins, beta-blockers and other meds,
in fact i'm wired up and wearing a portable ECG machine now, put on me yesterday to be taken back tomorrow where i'm due an echocardiogram, its due to my weird and fast heartbeats, that happen any time but after meals a lot of time, i've hormone issues too, which i take Testerone I was told I was diabetic around 3 years ago, my sugar levels where very high in the high teens after fasting, slowly they've dropped some how to 4-6, and lower where i start to feel shaky and dizzy, (I feel i've had diabetes longer because i've fainted a few times after feeling dizzy with low sugar levels) even though i still wasn't looking after myself, my diabetic nurse seemed happy with my improvements, but I was eating wrong foods etc. apart from drinking lots of sugarfree squash drinks, (I don't drink tea or coffee), I thought it may of been due to the fact my pancreas is not working correct and not breaking my food down, after having to use the toilet up to 10-12 times a day, I was told only this just, last week by the gastrology consultant that due to my diabetes it was that, that may of damaged it.
I'm having a lot of pins and needles and numbness in my hands and feet recently in the last few months could this be diabetes too? I really didn't look after myself when young, plus i think breathing in spraypaint fumes and it staining my fingers etc may of caused a few issues, Ive already got arthritis that came on in the last 9-10 years and diagnosed around 5 years ago which is getting worse, they say its Osteoarthritis, then Psoriatic arthritis, as i do have psoriasis that's pretty bad effecting most of my body, but they told me i never had that even though i had all the symptoms, so they told me it was Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia.
Its stopped me from my main love as a graffiti artists, but i now paint on canvas with all meduims and styles not just graffiti or spray paint, ive even been commissioned by my GP recently to paint him a still life representing is job and life through painting items that symbolized his job etc..miles away from graff, anyway i'll get to my point..sorry for going on..

So after eating sweet foods and all kinds of rubbish in the new year about one week into it i thought i cant go on like this putting so much weight feeling like ****, not being able to concentrate on my work, no attention span etc, feeling really depressed about my life, and how fun and good life was once,
I just wasn't sure what to do? I was always confused by the advice given by my nurse, the info i've read online, and what I heard, but first was to stop eating the ****, i usually enjoyed yogurts at night after a ****** meal. I must add I'm not a meat eater, i'm not a full veggie, but feel sick with the amount of parts they chuck in to things like sausages, ham, plus cant stand the taste of animal fats.
So I thought i'd start by eating more fruit, so invested in a certain smoothie maker, ideal for a man as cleaning it is simple, lol.. as the blades come off and screw on to the bottle, you the fit it to the machine blitz the fruit with milk, you just screw the blades off the bootles given then put the tops on, they look like sports drinks, Anyway i begun to buy unsweetened almond milk instead of dairy due to two reasons the fat and it upsets my stomach more.
I seen this meal replacement tub on Amazon, it was a diet whey protein shake, I read some of the reviews, one was by an older fella aged 60 with type 1 diabetes, that not only that i wrote saying since he begun the shake, hes reduced the amount of insulin he takes, his blood sugar as gone back to normal, his diabetic nurse is very happy with him, and hes lost a lot of weight. its got no carbs just whey protein, plus so many vitamins, minerals etc you make two a day, and one meal at night.

I thought I'd buy it to add to the strawberries, that i already put into my shakes/smoothies as it comes in strawberry, and other flavours, i also put in apples, pears, and other fresh fruit, and frozen if i can get it. When i order online i can get it, Since using this my stomach is flatter by inches, I'm noticing much more muscle, that could be due to the testosterone, i've not weighed myself, i'll wait until my next appointment with gastro to see my weight, but i can see the results so far, i only started this in jan, I've saved money from not buying **** foods eg crisps, biscuits, etc, because i don't feel the need to eat any snacks at all i'm not as thirsty, my bowels still are pretty bad, i've got to wait for the gastro doctor to write to my doctor to start the medication, but its improved. and i feel so much better mentally, less foggy, everything feels much clear, it's done me a world of good.
just one question is the fruit bad for me, as some say to stay away from fruit, but i see it as this nature made these foods humans i've been eating berrys and all kinds of plants for thousands of years they must be better for you than other foods, eg fast foods, where its not natural, they say diabetes as only begun in the last 200years Anyway yeah i'm i doing the right thing using this high protein shake, its about time i have one now, I don't eat Breakfast due to a certain med i take that i drink on an empty stomach, its sugarfree btw.
Sorry for the long post plus any mistakes in my spelling and grammar, I hope you understand, And thank you for any advice and information regarding what ive wrote., Its very confusing on what conflicting information about diets etc your told or read..
Thanks again...Kevin..

Hi Kevin,

The advice for newly diagnosed is a good place to start.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.26870/

With your multiple health problems I would suggest that you need input from professionals as to a suitable eating plan in view of the fact that your bowels are sluggish.

As to diabetes only being discovered 200 years ago,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_diabetes

I hope others will offer suggestions as you are a complex case.

Hi Kevin

Welcome to the forum!

I appreciate that it is tempting to seek guidance online from fellow diabetics, after all there are plenty of friendly, experienced and knowledgable members on this forum. However you do appear to have a number of health issues besides your diabetes and most of us are unlikely to be aware of the impact on these other issues of any proposed meal plan changes. So be careful about accepting such advice no matter how well intentioned it may be and however much it is based on our own personal experience in dealing with diabetes. As the previous poster has suggested, you really should seek professional guidance before going ahead with any plans.

That does not mean that this forum will be of no use to you. Use it to educate yourself about diabetes, to gain insight into how others are coping with this disease and as a minimum to collect ideas and issues to discuss with your doctors. Use it as well to just express your thought, feelings, let off steam or whatever else will make you feel better.

If I may suggest, as you are an artist you might like to share with us photos of some of your work. I am sure we would all be very interest to see them.

All the best

Pavlos
