Hi All,
A little advice please I am a type 2 diabetic and my surgery I feel doesn’t understand much regarding my blood tests etc
I have just had a result re my last blood test, and doctor is saying I was very high at 175
I asked what is this in MMOL as that is what my contour next is reading, but didn’t really give me a explanation
Anyone can advise please

Hi @Bazdavis and welcome

You’ve definitely come to the right place for information, advice and support.

First, a couple of questions for you, which will help people to tailor their responses to you. Are you taking any medication for your diabetes, and if so, which ones?

What sort of readings are you seeing on the contour next?

Is the 175 you mention your HbA1c? If so, then it’s not directly related to the readings you’re getting on the contour next. The HbA1c is an estimate of your average blood sugar levels over the previous 8-12 weeks, whereas the readings you take yourself are a snapshot of what your blood sugars are at that particular moment.

There is a calculator which can give you a rough idea of what your own blood sugar readings might translate into in terms of an HbA1c and vice versa, but it is only a guide. You can find it here (although I’m not getting it to work on my ipad).

I’m not sure how long you’ve been diagnosed, but if fairly recently, then the link below may be helpful.

Do come back with any other questions.

I'm guessing the 175 is your fasting blood in mg/dl (american units).
Divide by 18 to convert to mmol/L so 175/18 = 9.7.
Ideally your fasting blood should be 4.0 to 5.6.

You might need to ask your surgery what the 175 actually was.

Hello and welcome,

I agree with @Goonergal that you have found an amazing place for diabetics. People here are amazing.

Take some time to read the link you have been given and read around.

Before any more specific suggestions are given- it would be helpful if you let us know what medications you are on. The advice can then be given that will be more helpful.

If you are not on any mediation that effects your blood sugar levels (and for this metformin doesn't count) many may suggest that you lower your carb level significantly. Many of the medical profession don't necessarily agree with that advice. They are happy for you to reduce your sugar intake but keep 'healthy carbs'. In my opinion I think that this is where your meter comes into play. I found that eating 'healthy carbs' kept my blood sugars high or caused a spike. By dramatically lowering my carb intake my levels have dropped, I've lost weight and lost my asthma.

Read around and post. This place is amazing and I have found so much help, advice and support here.

Good luck and welome.
