Hello everyone,
I hope you can help point me in the right direction.
Basically I recently discovered my two year old showing a lot of signs of being diabetic, constant thirst, weeing, crying in pain for reasons we can't understand.
He saw our GP last week and we had arranged a set of blood tests, liver profile, kidney profile, hb1(apologies I don't know it off by heart), a fasting glucose test and another test.
The results came back on Yesterday with a fasting glucose level of 3.4. Now when I got him to the GP to have the bloods taken he was unbelievably lethargic and it was a very scary sight so we had to take him to hospital.
The GP wants to discuss things with us but we can't get in to see him for another week. The hb1 test also was not back from the hospital.
My worry is we are going abroad on holiday the 4th may. What happens if this is diabetes? We wouldn't be likely to get any appointments before we fly out.
We have saved for 4 years for this holiday but I am seriously considering cancelling it because I am worried something would happen whilst away.

The GP hasn't told us anything, just the receptionist told me the fasting score. What on earth does this mean?
Thanking you all in advance for any advice you can offer.

Hi @Chompersmummy it might help you to know that a fasting blood glucose level of <5.6 is considered normal - http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-...-children/basics/tests-diagnosis/con-20029197 .

I'm sorry your having to be concerned about your son. I would try to be a little reassured that the doctor isn't rushing to see you with the blood results (I appreciate that is likely to be very cold comfort when you are anxious to get the results - sorry) because if he is not calling you back urgently I would hope that means the results don't show any major concerns.

Fingers crossed when you see the doctor next week he will be able to put your mind at rest. Of course, if you are concerned about your son before your appointment it might be worth calling for drop out appointments etc.

Hoping for a good outcome for your son & that you enjoy your holiday (I wouldn't be making any moves to cancel it until you've seen the doctor, if you are really concerned you might want to double check what your holiday insurance covers) :)

Could you speak to your GP on the phone before that? At least then you'd have an idea what he or she was thinking.

I completely understand why you're worrying. I wouldn't cancel your holiday, but if it was me is be phoning the surgery for more information, if only to put your mind at rest.

What did the hospital say when you went there with him?

hi
Thank you for your reply!

I understand it cannot be urgent as otherwise we would be seen sooner, so am greatful for that.
I was told by the hospital that levels under 3.7 for a child is abnormal. Hence my concern when the receptionist told me.

I am afraid o have not yet purchased travel insurance, but I wouldn't even be able to be sure what the 'condition' is until we get the full story.

I didn't even think this could be possible for a toddler to have. Do you know how long the hb1 results take to come back?

Thank you again for replying x

My HbA1C results usually take a few days, spending on where I have it done. Maybe 4 working days?

Thank you for that. Maybe they will be back Monday. I have just gone back to work as well, I am lucky my new boss has been very sympathetic to all this. x

Definitely worth checking. Trust your instinct. You know if your child's not right in himself. Don't be afraid to phone up or push a little.

I hope you get some answers, and most of all that your son feels better very soon :)

Do update us when you get the results back.

I will do. Thank you very much for your advice. It's good to know that if it is definatly diabetes that there is an excellent support network! x

Just to update you, the GP is seeing him this Wednesday. I guess the HbA1C result is back but I don't know the result yet.

Fingers crossed for him :)

If it was me, I'd make a list of questions and also use that paper to write down test results or names. I find GP appointments are over quite quickly and you only remember things you meant to say when you get out.

Good luck :)
