Hi
My 33 year old brother was diagnosed with T2 3 weeks ago after a spell in hospital due to Diabetic Ketoacidosis. He was unaware of having T2 before although both our parents were diagnosed with T2 in their 50s.
His BG was at least 16.5 when he went in 3 weeks ago and he was given 850g Metformin (twice a day) and 80mg Glycron (twice a day) upon being discharged and was pronounced T2 diabetic - they also found that he had a chest infection (that was clearing up) and high BP. Initially his BG was okay on the meds and he quit smoking immediately and cut out the white carbs and sugary drinks. He's overweight and not very active.
His BP is normal but for the past week his BG has been crashing to 3.5 and even 2.2 last Saturday. It usually occurs before 12:00 so I got him to eat a banana between breakfast (oats with seeds and fruit plus skimmed milk) and lunch. However, the lows are getting lower and occuring before and after a meal although it still appears random.
His Metformin was reduced to 500g but this did not help.
We were so scared of him going into a seizure or coma after Saturday's 2.2 that he did not take either medication this morning before going back to the hospital. When he saw a doctor today, they took him off the Glycron and told him to come back in a week. No explanation was given.
He's had a couple of highs today (8.7 - 9.7) but has not gone below 4 so far this evening (fingers crossed) although he did drop to 3.3 at 11:00 today at the hospital but he had 5 an hour before!
Sunday's BG levels:
Fasting = 3.6 (had a glass of milk and bread before sleep!) Before lunch = 4.1 2 hrs after lunch = 3.6 Before Dinner = 9.2 2 hrs After Dinner = 3.7 23:00 = 4.3
Today his BG levels:
Fasting = 3.8 After Breakfast = 8.5 (NO tablets taken) 2 hrs later = 5 Before lunch = 3.6 2 hrs after lunch = 8.5
Before Dinner = 8.8 2 hrs After Dinner = 4.8 22:00 = 5
He's been having glucose sweets and snacks to pull the numbers up when they're low.
Anyone else had a similar experience or have any theories on this, please? I am beside myself with fear and stress over this as I worry about the dangers of him getting brain damage, getting seizures or going into a coma .
We can't make sense of what is going on or what is causing the lows. No idea how long the Glycron stays in the body before we see a change. Are the occassional carbs causing a crash? This is all so stressful and it seems like a life and death situation!
Our dear Dad passed away at 65 a few years ago from a burst ulcer but he was not in a good way prior to that thanks to the Diabetes. I can't believe my brother now has it at such a young age for T2.
Thank you for any replies and assistance - any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
