Hi - I'm Jenny,
I was diagnosed with Diabetes 3 or 4 weeks ago and told nothing more about it. Prior to being diagnosed I was so tired I was sleeping 18 hours a day and hardly awake the other 6! When diagnosed, I was put on Metformin and for 3 or 4 days after I felt fantastic and had all my energy back. However, I have gradually been getting more and more tired ever since and have now gone back to sleeping 18 hours a day and have been off sick again today, which I really hate doing.
I urgently need some advice as I am close to being sacked and chucked off my Uni course, as well as being very depressed.
Thanks,
Jenny x

Hi Jenny and welcome to the forum. If you are on Metformin then they think that you have type 2 diabetes. you say that you are at uni,do you mind me asking how old you are Jenny?

Hey Jenny,

Have you changed your diet at all since you found out? I was sleeping a lot before I was diagnosed, put on metformin and my tiredness is getting better, but i have changed my diet quite radically to lower my carbs, haven't eaten pasta, bread (apart from nimble) or potatoes since i found out. Don't know if this helps?

Welcome to the forum

The reason I asked your age jenny is because ,occasionally ,they with misdiagnose type 1 for type2. Are your doctors certain that it is type2? You can ask to have a C-peptide test done to check on the workings of your pancreas, this will confirm how much insulin you are producing.
If you are type 2 you need to look at your diet and try and cut down on the amount of carbohydrate that you eat.Do you have a blood testing monitor so that you can monitor your blood sugar levels and the effect that food has on your blood sugars?

Hi Becca / Sue,

The day I found out I immediately cut out all carbs and sugars and just crashed completely. Since then I have tried cutting things out but with not much luck. I've had carb free dinners yesterday and today but haven't felt any improvement. But maybe I need to cut out carbs completely? Are there any good sites for finding out about carb free breakfasts and lunches?

As for the type - they haven't said Type 1 or 2 - I just assumed Type 2 because of my age?? I don't have a blood testing monitor - is it worth getting one and measuring my blood sugars when I'm feeling ok and when I'm very tired to see if they differ a lot?

The other problem is that twice I have been sick in the night - both times it came and went very suddenly as if I need to get food out of my system. Does anyone else suffer from this?

Thanks again for any help,
Jenny x

None of us here advocate a no carb diet,Jenny. It's more a question of reducing the amount of carbs so that your blood sugar levels are under control.A blood testing monitor is an essential tool in all this.
If you are on metformin then they think that you are type 2.You are young to be type 2 and ,conversely some type 1's have been diagnosed at your age.
You really need to go and see your doctor and get all these questions answered and get a monitor and test strips from him if possible.

I do eat carbs, about 80g a day, but that is just me, now that i can test myself that will go up or down depending on the results :) I have found that because I wanted to limit my carb intake, some foods just didn't seem viable, like one slice of white bread = 19g of carbs (or around that, cant' rembember exactly) and one slice of nimble was 8 (or is it 9? lol it's 5am sorry for my vagueness), so to me, no brainer, I want to maximise what I can have for my 80g of carbs a day not blow it all on something I don't need anyway! I think there is more I can personally do to tweak my diet, but that will come now I can test, but so far, i've felt far better than I was feeling before, hence now its 5am and I can't sleep lol Not being able to sleep was my norm, so all is well! I don't think i've ever had a totally carb free dinner, the lowest ones have about 8 in, but the highest has had around 50, so depends on what I feel like eating, but I always try to make sure there are some in there lol Read the labels on things, have a few carbs but try to avoid things like pasta, rice , bread and potatoes and see how you feel then, everyone's diet and diabetes is different, so from what i've gathered you have to tailor your own diet based on what your body will allow :) Do you have a meter yet to test your blood sugar lvl's throughout the day? That will help to see what food you can and can't eat, bit of a pain but I think helpful :)

Can't say i've felt or been sick, could that be just an upset tummy or maybe some kind of virus? I know there are lots of weird things going round lately!
