Newbie wondering about fat content

Hi Guys,

I am new to the site, have been diabetic type II for 3 years and am just now getting round to managing it better. Have done quite a lot of reading and am very persuaded by the low carb arguement however I still need to lose about 4 stone in weight (am currently 5'5" and 14.5 st). I have an idea about max carb intake but unsure about max fat intake? Is there a recommended fat, carb, protein ratio that would be optimal for weight loss?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
:D

Hi Jen and welcome. :D

You can get very, very complicated if you are not careful! I think that you will find that cutting down on the carbs is the key and many folk on here have lost loads of weight doing just that. 8)

If you give us a bit more information it will give us a bit more to go on. For example do you self test to keep an eye on your BG levels :?:

Hi Jendayi,

I asked about the perfect ratio of fat to carb to protein when I first joined the forum and the consensus seemed to be "everyone is different"!
I am low-ish carbing and also try to limit my fat intake to about the same amount - about 50-60g a day. I have lost 50lb now, but am now losing very slowly, so may have to cut back further.....
I think it's important to eat only natural fats - not those horrible trans-fats - and to try and eat mostly vegetable/fish fats, but when it comes to weight loss, all fats are equal :D

Thanks Guys,

Have been self testing regularly for a few days now.
Early morning BG is 6.5-6.9
So far most meals are less than 7.1 at 1hr post meal and less than 6.5 at 2hrs post meal.

A typical day is:
Breakfast
Portabello mushroom stuffed with goats cheese topped with lean bacon + glass veg juice.
or
Flax bread (made with flax meal and ground almond) with mushroom tapenade +veg juice.

Lunch
Chicken salad with tbsp caesar dressing + tbsp flax meal.
or
Veg soup and flax bread

Snack
160g berries

Dinner
Salmon with green beans, broccoli and hollondaise sauce + tbsp flax meal
or
Turkey with cauliflower mash and greens with peppercorn sauce + tbsp flax meal.

Snack
1oz nuts

When i break the ratio down, it looks roughly like carb 20%, fat 45%, prot 35% which is daily 55g carbs, 57g fat, and 99g prot.

Does this sound ok, worried I am overdoing fat?

Any advice much appreciated.

Hi Jen. :D

Is this a complete change of diet? It seems good and if your BG levels show that they too are good that is probably the best you can do at the moment. It takes time for changes in diet to filter through and the weight aspect really should take time anyway. I know that the 4 stone you want to lose seems a lot but there are people on here who have lost that and more within a year so do take heart about that. Not all fat is bad and certain fats are essential. You really need to eat to your meter at the moment and just carry on as you are doing.

If the menu for the near future is as good I'll be over shortly!!

I think the idea has always been - beware the fat content, but I feel it's the sugar content that is the most important. I NEVER buy anything 'low fat' as 9 times out of 10 it has added sugar. By removing the fat, manufacturers take away the taste and have to add sugar to put it back in again. Look at the ingredients on 'baked not fried' crisps - you'll find they contain sugar!! We do need fat in our diet for a number of reasons and not all fat is bad fat. As long as you keep away from saturated fat you should be OK. I've lost 21 kgs since 1st March this year, just by cutting out starchy carbs and still eating cheese!! I must be doing something right eh?? :D :D :D

Thankyou guys,

Yes Synonym it is a complete change of diet but only been on it less than a week. Haven't weighed myself as yet as I don't want obsess too much and am going to weigh once a week.

Sue, if I lose anything close to that I'll be very happy indeed!

Hi Jen
Just popped bye to say hello.
I was diagnosed with type 2 about 2 weeks ago. So at 68 I supposed I have been lucky up till now.
It has been quite a jolt to find so many young people like yourself with this added dimension to consider and I hope you will achieve the target you have set your sights on.
Bye the way thank you for showing me (unwittingly) the ticket factory site, having that on my profile sort of tells everyone what I need to do and so I can't kid myself.
Good Luck to you
David
