Hi, just been told I'm prediabetic. I have to cut down on carbs but i don't eat bread pastries pasta or potatoes much. I rarely cook as on my own so ready meals mostly. I very obese. Am a vegetarian so no meat or fish. Each label I look at in the shops says
it contains carbohydrates. I dont know how many I can have per day? Looked at the forum and the Diet dr. almost everything I like I have to cut out! I will do it if it stops me becoming diabetic but it will be so hard. I just don't really know what I have to do other than exercise, lose weight and stop carbs? any help please?
thanks

Hi Avyi, to get a good idea of what to do, read round the forums and the main site. When I was first diagnosed, I had no clue where to start, this site and the posters have a wealth of information, not always from the mainstream! One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to get a blood testing meter to monitor your own blood sugar levels. This will tell you what you can and cannot eat. It will be slow progress in the begining, but persist and it will be worth the effort. Take control, it's your body after all! Good luck.

Sounds like you know exactly what you need to do! That's your main problem solved. Your in the right place for help on how, just ask.
There are many ways to get where you want to be, pick one that's best for you. If your not sure which one, pick any until you are. The sooner you start the better.

It also might be helpful to look at the vegitarian section of the forum for some great food ideas.

Hi newby, I agree on getting a meter and testing to see what affects you. The main advice I have is to learn to love vegetables, and cook for yourself - at least you know what is in your meals. you can take a whole bunch of cut up vegetables and spread them out on two trays, drizzle with a little olive oil, spices of your choice, and roast for about half an hour. These can be added to greens for a salad, eaten on their own, baked with eggs for a quiche (crustless) or over sprialized zuchini. Cook once, eat four meals!

Hi there :) A diagnosis of prediabetes is a great opportunity to try to turn things around. I hope you can give it your best shot.

Remember that you are not aiming for no-carb, just low carb and good carb. Exercise will help too, but it doesn't have to mean hitting the gym. Just something that gets you moving and is enjoyable. Low carb vegetarian eating is easy and delicious once you get the hang of it. I often cook for one too as my kids are non-diabetic. As @Africanaussie suggests, there are ways of batch cooking so that you can cook once for a few days at a time and still keep it varied. Your meter will be a great help. Here is a link to the veggie forum where you will be most welcome. All the best.

AS,
It is very hard to spend a couple of hours to get up, drive and get to a gym or even do an hour of hard exercise. Even top athletes need a boost. So, most people need something effective without negative side effects to help them 1) get up on their feet, 2) feel motivated, 3) shed weight and build real muscle 4) reduce illness and detoxify body 5) improve performance 6) stay fit, 7) while not spending their entire income and time on it.
