Hi ,I am new first time on here. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes November 2009. Not on medication yet. I use the urine dip sticks to test, but don't really understand them as they are not very accurate.s
Nurse says not to worry, but I really do not know what my levels are. Anyone have any advice for me, do you think I should buy a monitor.

Hope this makes some sort of sense, thanks any advice welcome. :D

Hi Eil and welcome to the forum. :)

Clearly your nurse is not supportive of you having any knowledge or being able to control your own condition but you won't know what your condition is until you find out the numbers so you need to ask and insist on having a print out. Often the DNs have meters given to them by reps and could pass one on to you so it is worth asking for one of them.

If you get no joy and you do want to take control then I guess you will have to buy your own meter and testing strips; at least that way you can find out what foods you can safely eat and what you need to cut down or out.

It is an odd state of affairs when an HCP tells you that your body is not working properly but don't worry about it.  Can you imagine the reactions if your garage said a similar thing to car owners about their car :?: :!:

Hello again, I have been to see nurse today. She told me to stop worrying, and not to use the urine sticks anymore, I have been put on Metformin, I have to go back in 3 months when I will get bloods checked again.

I asked about a machine, I was told could not have one as I am not on insulin. So I suppose I shall just have to see how I go. :?

Thanks again

Hi Eil,
Sorry to hear that you had no luck with the provision of a meter. It is the tool that you will need to see which foods are affecting your blood sugar levels. :( Did the nurse take a test with her meter or did she know what your blood sugar levels were when you had an HBA1c? Seems strange to put you on Metformin and not telling you why.
Have you been given any advice about diet?

Catherine.

Hello again Eil :)

What a shame that you are not being enabled to control your condition and as you don't mention the numbers perhaps you were not even given those either?

Don't forget that you can get yourself a meter and strips and take charge anyway; it is your life, your health and your diabetes :!:

Hi Catherine, The nurse told me my reading was 7, I asked about diet as I am overweight, I get confused again, because what is low in fat is usually high in sugar :? I feel as though I am in a no win situation. I usually have to go to the toilet through the night, nurse said the meformin would help as I must be producing sugar, I took my first one today so will see how I go.

Thanks again

Eileen :)
