Hello all. Diagnosed three weeks ago (Type 2). The doctor prescribed Metformin 1/day but I had a kidney ultrasound recently and getting the results on Monday. I understand that metformin can have an adverse effect on kidneys. Should I start on the stuff or wait for kidney result?

Hi @Skytrucker

Sorry to hear You've joined our merry band..

From what I understand Metformin, is pretty mild but effective for T2D.

If your on here, and using diet/exercise, I'd say hold off until you get your results back re kidneys.
Be a good opportunity then to discuss any issues with relevant doctors etc.

Now I'm over that shock of first being DX, I can see the disease has taken years to develop in me,
So a few days drug free, would be a sensible option, without to much harm to yourself, I would suggest.

Good luck, for Monday.

Welcome to the Forum @Skytrucker,
I have a slightly different slant on what jjraak says above:
We don't give medical advice here, so you need to make any decision based upon your own assessment of your situation.
Having said that, what long term difference will a few days make? - Unless you are already at 'death's door' due to complications etc.

I know that people don't like too much posting in bold, but this point deserves emphasis: imho Type 2 Diabetes is all about what you eat and what you used to eat. All other factors such as medication, exercise and being overweigh or not are much less important than what you eat and how your body reacts to that (Blood Glucose levels).

There are 3 proven approaches to T2D (in addition to or instead of medication). I list them in my own order of preference:
Low Carb (and Higher Fat) 'Way Of Eating' - i.e. pretty much the reverse of what we have been told is 'healthy'!
Crash Diet such as 'Newcastle' or Dr Michael Moseley's 'Blood Sugar diet'.
Bariatric Surgery.
