Just Stepped out of the doctors and i am now officially a diabetic to my surprise. What now? More pills.....

It depends what type of diabetes you have , usually type 1 or 2 , whatever it is still a shock to be told this but don't worry with a few lifestyle changes it is manageable , I personally have been type 1 for 47 years with no problems !

Hi, and welcome to the club nobody wanted to join. You're in the right place to find lots of useful information and helpful personal experiences that should help you in managing your diabetes and improving things. Has anyone talked to you yet about your blood glucose levels and the advantages of testing?

best of luck.

If you don't want to go down the route of pills, then more pills, and so on, then try a low carb diet. No need to feel hungry, and it usually improves other blood markers too.

Hello and welcome @RobbieG

While it is common for medical professionals to diagnose more medication, there are changes to your diet that may also help.

My first suggestion is to get a meter. This is the tool that will help you work out the effects of anything you do on your blood sugar levels. This then allows you to make decisions with some knowledge.

My second suggestion is to lower your carb intake. That is all carbs not just the 'unhealthy' carbs.

In relation to medication there are things like metformin which helps but doesn't directly lower your levels and there are things like insulin which do. Whether you take them is completely up to you but I would suggest reading around to learn a bit about them before you do.

I did take metformin for a while but am no longer taking it. I went very low carb and am able to control my levels that way. That is the solution that works from, however, we are not all the same and different approaches work for different people. The important thing is to manage your levels.

Good luck and welcome.
