Hi, after a routine blood test I was told i had a blood sugar count of 7.1. This was two months ago. Since then I've moderated my lifestyle - more exercise, cutting down on alcohol, eating more regularly and cutting down on carbs and sugar. I've got another blood test at the end of this week. Is there anything else I should be doing to decrease the BS count? How bad is 7.1? Advice appreciated.

Hi there

Welcome to the forum, sorry about your diagnosis. But it could be a whole lot worse and this is a good forum where you can learn lots about diabetes and how to control it whist still living life to the full.
It sounds as if your sugars are not too high, some people, incl myself, have readings of 20 at the time of diagnosis.
You seem already on the right path in achieving control of your condition, I would say get yourself a tester and learn how the different foods affect your bg and read up on diabetes as much as you can, incl the posts and links in here, the more you learn about diabetes the better but remember its sometimes trial and error, what works for one person might not work for another.
Its all very interesting stuff though and on the whole quite positive.

All the best

Karen

Thanks for the advice. Is there anything I should do on the morning of the test, drink more water, exercise etc.? Is there any food I should particularly avoid on the night before?

Hi popps, welcome to the forum. There is nothing you can do to alter the bs reading the day or longer before. The test measures your average bs over the last two to three months period, it is called a Hba1C blood test. Your blood cells renew themselves every two to three months, and during this period they leave a marker which the test picks up, as to how high and low your bs as been. If you want to influence the results you need to change your eating habits over each three month periods between tests.

This is a simple explanation as to what the test is, I am sure some one else will give a more technical answer if required.

Hi Popps and welcome..I'm pretty new at all this...I was diagnosed about 2 weeks ago and my reading was 9.5...all I've done to date is cut out all sugar etc...I was a chocoholic...lowered my calorie intake to get my weight down..Was told my blood wont be tested a another couple of months at least meanwhile I still feel fine etc...the nurse gave me the same info as Geoff has.
ps must admit I find the 12 hour fast hard...so tend to drink water..as I loath black tea/coffee.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I'm due another test tomorrow, which willl be about two and a half months after the first. The nurse told me about two months (whenever was convenient). In the meantime I had to take in a urine sample for testing which proved all clear. Does any one know whether this is indicative that the BS level has gone down?

Hi Popps, I think in you case, if 7.1mmol/lt was your highest reading there will normally be nothing to show in your urine. Glucose generally only spills in to your urine at much higher levels, mostly readings over 10.0 mmol/lt and higher, when ketone's also become present. This is just a standard test done each time you visit your clinic.

Hi

gosh a reading of only 7.1 at diagnosis, mine was 28, it's now around 6-7, i've had to give up some of the things i really like but all in all my diet hasn't changed dramatically, still have some choc when i want however the portion size is a lot less.

my only problem is weight, i lost loads prior to being diagnosed but now they've put me on the meds the weight is creeping up despite running 6 miles a day and cutting down on my food intake, if i have to snack it's fruit rather than biccs or choc, i have a consult with the doc to see if thay can tka eme off Gliclazide, i think that's what is causing it.

anyway good luck and it's not the end of the world.
(diagnosed at Christmas and coping well.

by the way thanks you to all you guys you have been a massive source of help to me
