Hi Everyone

Just joined today, went to DR on Monday for pains in back, he did a urine test and said I had a kidney infection and high level of glucose. Put on some tablets for kidney infection. Had blood tests on Tuesday and told yesterday that blood glucose level is 7.6 which I understand in borderline. I haven't been told anything else part form given a diet sheet and told to see the practice nurse next Friday. I asked if I had diabetes and was told I had to wait until I see the practice nurse. Found this forum and it looks really useful as I don't really have a clue what's going on at the moment.

Hi Paul and welcome to the club.

Was your test on Tuesday a fasting test? Did it include an HbA1c test? You can find this out by asking the GP's receptionist to have a look on the computer, ask what the result was, and then ask for a print out. You are entitled to this, and you will find it very useful for future comparisons. You need to know if you had an HbA1c as this is the test used for diabetes diagnosis at the present time. Your 7.6 might be just a random glucose test, might be a fasting test, might be an HbA1c. There are differences, and it is important you know.

Ok thanks for that, it was a fasting test and nothing was said about the type of test every time it asked a question was told to wait until I see the practice nurse next week.

Sounds like your GP knows nothing about diabetes! This isn't unusual. But do make sure you get a print out of your results, and if you haven't had an HbA1c, then insist on having one. (Needn't be fasting). Good luck with your nurse.
